Document thumbnails should reflect number of pages

Submitted by brian.shapiro on November 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Icons, Usability

Thumbnails are simply shown with a rectangular border—this doesn't give a good visual representation of multi-page documents.

File types that have the 'pages' property, like Word Documents, should have a representation based on the number of pages they have—a document with more than one page shown as a pile, the front page with a curl.

Or, if there's a reason to think users will confuse this as a stack of documents (which I'm not sure they will) at least represent multi-page documents with the page curl. Its a little strange seeing a 100 page report represented as a single flat sheet of paper.

Nice idea. That being said, what would be the expected behavior if a document has, say, five or more pages? The icon would become rather large rather quickly.

brian.shapiro wrote on November 3, 2008, 7:23am

I don't think it needs to be represented with more than three sheets-- the point is just to show that it has more than one page, since I think showing just one page looks a little funny for a 100 page document.

If they decided they wanted to show more than three pages they could use the same effect you see in the details pane when you have multiple files selected. The stacking is compressed more and more so the pile doesn't take up more screen space.

But like I said, if nothing else, they should at least add the page curl.

On a mac it is represented with a binder and page curl. Which is useful. Paperclips or staples anyone?

brian.shapiro wrote on November 3, 2008, 7:58am

--right now, if you drag multiple files in Explorer it will show a pile of up to four icons, so four is a number that could work also.

To help visually distinguish them, the pile as shown for a multi-page document could be in a different direction-as I've shown it-from the pile representing a stack of files.

Yeah. As long as they don't keep stacking up until the icon is huge, that's a great idea.

netfreak wrote on November 3, 2008, 3:53pm

WHAT WOULD be a huge idea is to have that kind of thumbnail, but if you hover over a mouse pointer and scroll the wheel it grows larger and you can flip through the pages

mdta wrote on November 3, 2008, 6:35pm

A paperclip in the top left is a nice idea, but perhaps make sure in document view, the page numbers show in the explorer views would be a good compromise.

Yeah I agree with hoopla_punta; a paperclip should represent multiple pages. Its simple and easy.

+1

The paper could also turn slightly yellow, when it is older. You could tell new documents (bright white) from old ones (yellow-ish) with a glance...

@Jemm: hahaha

thats not a bad idea also a icon that shows the doucments fan out.

Netfreak has the right idea thogh not to sure on the growing larger part, plus it would be an idea apple will get mad since they already have that feature in osx, itunes and iphoto

YouTube just added a small display on their video thumbnails which shows the length of the video. Maybe this could be added to video thumbnails in Windows 7

1+ Nice idea!

Thunderbuck wrote on January 28, 2009, 5:55pm

Yup, not a bad idea. Visual representation of approx. file size is a great idea, and this is a reasonable metaphor.

This is less Windows and more Application Developer.
When Adobe provides functionality to surface thumbnails for PDFs, then they would have to do the same thing.. if I use another PDF software then they also have to do the same thing

brian.shapiro wrote on February 27, 2009, 6:00pm

burnblue, applications are in charge of creating a thumbnail , but the suggestion deals with the fact that different types of file have a 'pages' property in their metadata and this can be read in explorer

But already said here, there should be only two icons : one page / two pages or more (and possibly the number of pages in a corner of the icon ?)

BMN wrote on April 17, 2011, 9:48am

a horizontal stack maybe? --> ==== :D
or can leave it as 1-3 stacks and just append the number
