Make Windows 7 Paint and Wordpad have autosave feature

Submitted by formula_86 on February 3, 2010 to Annoyance, Usability

Why can apps like Windows Journal for example have an Autosave feature, but Paint and Wordpad can't? I find it annoying if I have been working so long on a complicated picture in Paint, then it randomly crashes, (although obviously very rare).

Make Paint and Wordpad have auto recovery features so that frustration of forgetting to save complex stuff and then accidentally losing it through a crash is a thing of the past.

Agreed. They redid the UI, why not add some basic functionality in there?

Windows Journal has autosave to copy basic handwritten notebook functionality where you don't have to consciously save anything you've done with a pen. As it was a showcase app for the original Tablet platform it got a lot of special attention.

From an economic POV I can see that there is less incentive for implementing autosave for other apps as it undermines the differential between free utilities and premium packages like Word.

You do have a choice of replacing Paint and Wordpad with other free tools like Paint.NET etc.

True, but that's not the the topic is about. Some people just dont want to "replace" paint. Quit getting people off topic
