Due to the stupidity of Long (that's me), all comments on the Windows 7 Taskforce after March has been lost.
As a result of this unfortunate event, a transition to a new backend (the one powering heresanidea.net) is being considered.

+1, but I'd say it shouldn't disappear completely. Why not shrink it and leave a 5px wide switch so you can show or hide the side pane. I just thought of Opera where you could add such a button to show or hide the panels...
Just in case you need quick access to one of the links in the pane ;)

or just fix the problem of the text being messed up

Indrek wrote on January 14, 2010, 8:24pm

If the customer wants to mess up the window that bad, I say let them. I can't see a normal person doing that during their everyday activities anyway. By accident, sure, but then they can simply drag it back and not do it again.

But that's just my opinion.

True, but this has been a problem since Vista. XP and before had no such thing

seoman wrote on January 20, 2010, 2:56pm

Huh?
but at least those control panels are sizeable

Resize the window so the text does fit.

<Win+Left>, <Win+right> or <Win+up>
are sufficient enough to fix this behaviour

You missed the point. He doesnt want to resize anything. He wants the sidebar removed

I do dislike those side panels aswell.
But since MS dropped the tabs they have to use this space consuming sidebars.

There are links on that sidebar wich are only reachable within that particular control panel. Making them unreadable wouldn't make any sence at all.

What should change is the collor/appearence of of the links depending on the target.
The only way to tell if it's a link within the panel or outside is by looking at the space between them.

I must say i realy dislike this new look/beaviour.
Tabs may no be that beatyfull but the are more easy to understand the structure.

This new way is soooooooooooo much better. Tabs are annoying especially when they are stacked. I agree the color sucks, and they should hgave had it match your window color.

strongly agree with smart sidebars.. if there just isn't room there just isn't room.
also, i would extend this to the explorer options.. if it's maximized i don't mind a preview bar taking half of my screen.. but when it's not using my entire desktop it seems to take way too much. up. i'd like to be able to opt in when it's smaller and opt out when it's larger automatically
