Bring back the sidebar in Windows 7 as an option!

Submitted by veer01_42 on January 12, 2010 to Aesthetics, Legacy, Usability

B4 Vista i never used widgets because they were pointless and i had to clear my screen every time i wanted to see them. With Vista and the Gadget sidebar, i had a place to not only house my gadgets, but i could set it to stay on top of windows, so all i had to do was glance to my left to check things like time, battery level, cpu and ram without having to move the mouse or click a bunch of stuff to get to the info.

Could Microsoft officially bring back the Sidebar and make it an option when using gadgets pretty please?

i found a little hack to get the sidebar, all it is, is basically copying 2 files from Vista's
program files\ sidebar folder to the same dir in Windows 7. It will bring back the sidebar and its functionality. I tried it in Win 7 Ultimate x86 and it works. Cheers

One more possible solution, a Gadget that acts like a sidebar, it stays on top of other windows and docks other gadgets, and doesnt cover any windows either. Its needs a bit of tweaking in the visuals departments, but its a descent option if you don't wanna go hacking the OS.

Basically i want the ability to reserve a space at the side of my monitor to dock my gadgets so my open windows don't cover the gadgets and the gadgets don't cover the window and I wont need to click or hit any shortcuts to see my gadgets!

Just make the bar optional so ppl who want the reserved docking area can have it and those that don't want the bar but still want the gadgets can have that too.
Thats all it is. I just liked the ability to dock my gadgets and be able to see them all the time without windows covering them, or them covering anything else!

I'd really like to see the longhorn sidebar make a come back, but that will never happen

Duplicate, so demoted (although I agree with the basic idea whole-heartedly).

Magnetic edges and Aero Peek are a more than adequate replacement IMO. -1.

"Magnetic edges and Aero Peek are a more than adequate replacement"

Ok so explain to me how its adequate in this situation.... I have my web browser maximised and i want to see whats my network throughput but i don't want to move my mouse or hit a keyboard shortcut to see it.... OH WAIT.... I can't!!!! The sidebar functionality was the reason i started using gadgets!!!!

Why are u douches so one track minded. The Aero peak handles ever situation except for this, and this happens to be the only situation i care about.

Furthermore, if ur gonna demote sum1 post ud better give a better explanation that "IMO" u idiot. Do u thing those three letters helps anyone. If thats all ur gonna post don't rank my pot and don't comment on it either!!!!

U say ppl say insulting things on the forums, but when u comment pointless rubbish like this, what do u thing ppl r gonna do?!?!?!?!

I'll tell you why. Because you seem like the kind of person who is obsessed with knowing their resource utilisation, and panic whenever CPU usage goes above 10%. And you know what? YOU SHOULD NOT CARE. Whenever your CPU usage is hovering at around 80%, and the computer is still performing smoothly, that's good - not bad. It means you are using the computing power that you paid for, and consequently attempting to monitor and maintain low CPU usage is a waste of time. How does this apply to you submission, you ask? Well, there is no reason for you to have such quick access to this information that you don't even have to move the mouse. Having to monitor system resources is a poor user experience, and we're far beyond that now. So here's some advice: remove all those ridiculous system state gadgets from your desktop, and do something productive or fun on your computer rather than just sitting watching the CPU usage bob up and down.

Idiot!!!!!!! It doesnt matter what the information is, be it system performance or ur favourite family pictures!!!!!!

And if i did care so much about system utilization, i wouldn't be using gadgets to begin with u unimaginative idiot!!!. I have 8 gigs of RAM a quad core processor !!!!! Did u look at the screen shot of my gadgets at all, i showed u guys my system resources in that screenshot so u'd understand where i was coming from!!!!

I usually encode videos where all 8 threads on my processor is maxed out and i still play call of duty 6 while thats going on.... performance isn't an issue and it isn't something i whine over!!! Its functionality u twit!!!

I need to keep an eye on my processor usage when i'm encoding videos!!! I need a network monitor because my ISP sucks ass and i like to see how much bandwidth i'm actually paying for!!! When im copying files over my home network, the network gadget give me a better idea of the actual speed than the windows copying file dialogue!!!!

I test programs as a hobby, and run virtual machines, usually 3 or 4 at a time so i need to look at system usage when i do my reviews!!! Yes watching these gadgets are part of my productivity... go figure!! I do have fun with my computer, but it doesn't require me to use gadgets to do that. When a game is in full screen i couldn't care less about the gadgets. But when i'm on my desktop working... i need to see them!

But again, it shouldn't matter what the gadget is showing u in terms of information, as long as u can get to it without having to clear anything to get to the info or hit some sort of shortcut to get to it!!

U mean all u could focus on was me being a performance freak????? I paid for the 8 gigs of ram... now USE IT!!!!!

Id still prefer the Longhorn sidebar anyway, but thats just my preference.

Heck Id even run Longhorn 4xxx builds as a main OS if it wasnt so buggy haha.

With the jade theme (slate was just a black and orange luna theme and plex was like a 2000 skin on steroids)
