PLEASE bring back the "UP" button!

Submitted by MrKuenning on December 5, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

One of the worst changes in vista is the removal of the folder "UP" button.

I realize there are a plethora of other ways to get "UP"

Folder tree panel
Back Button
Bread Crumbs...

None of these replace the usefulness of the "UP" button.

Back wont always work, obviously because up may not have been the last folder.
and if MS thought the bread crumbs were a clean replacement for the UP button they were wrong.

As you can see in my screen shot, there are many times were the bread crumbs don't show back far enough. Sometimes the folder name is so long its the only crumb. The logical quick thing to do is NOT click on the drop down and assume the first item on a long list is "UP"

I used the UP button way more than any other button in explorer, it could take you to the my computer or the desktop with a few presses.

You can also see in my image that the function is still there. As there is an up button in vista when I issued an open command.

Put the up button back. At the very least make it a folder option.

The open command in the background window is a Legacy XP one. The new Vista/7 open/save etc. Dialog DOES NOT have a up button.

Btw, there is a duplicate submission in this taskforce:

Yeah, I already posted this, and I had a long a frustrating talk with some people who just really hate this button for some reason... it's hopeless trying to reason with them because common sense and logic don't seem to apply to them. Breadcrumbs, folder trees, and the back button are all nice compliments to the Up button, but none of them can replace it completely, and they don't understand that.

Hopefully maybe you can convince them. Good luck with that.

It does replace it. just in a diferent way.

not this again. delete this submition and use the real one.

Neither breadcrumbs, folder trees or the back button take advantage of "muscle memory", which seems to be a "hot subject" at Microsoft these days.

Well people need to get with the times. theres always mac or linux if they chose to use it

I completely agree! The back and fwd are great the bread crumbs are nice, but it wouldn't hurt anyone to an optional folder option to insert the up button in between them.

There are a lot of things you can add or tweak windows with third party apps, but this type of feature isn't one of them. If you don't like it don't enable it.

Did you try using the Backspace key to go back? Even if you "can't" go back anymore, it will go backwards. Like your up button!.

I tend to think breadcrumbs are a replacement. The real issue to fix is when it sometimes inexplicably doesn't show all levels in the breadcrumbs bar (I think it doesn't let you escape from your user folder).

MrKuenning wrote on December 6, 2008, 9:52am

User folder is a perfect example. If I open my user folder and I am want to view the desktop in that folder the only action I know is click the tiny > sideways arrow that will in turn give me a drop down box with the list of above folders in reverse order...

andrei030 wrote on December 7, 2008, 3:46pm

This submission is really stupid. Why the hell you need the up button when there is a better way to up level? I think you already know it, but look the image http://tinyurl.com/6y5axy just click on the name of the folder you want to go.

andrei030 wrote on December 7, 2008, 6:11pm

anything I say is correct... but you are allways wrong and you think you're correct

andrei030 wrote on December 7, 2008, 6:50pm

Oh, I see what is this web page about... "no to 64-bit only" and "yes to up button", what you guys need is Windows 98...

Arayta wrote on December 7, 2008, 7:04pm

The up button makes it sooo much easier. I wll never understand why they don't want the UP button to coexist with other ways of getting around. I've already exausted myself with these people, and it's clear that they don't like things to be easier. Give them hard examples and they still deny the obvious.

Without the UP button I can't go higher than my user folder. To get there, I'd have to go to C:\Users by either typing it in or clicking on Computer then clicking the User folder. Tell me in what way is that easier then clicking a single button that remains in the same place?

I think they realize that the button would make things easier, they just don't want to admit that they were, quite obviously, wrong. Now because of their pride, Windows Explorer will be at least 15% less easier to use for everyone. Selfish pricks.

By the way, I see you have Fallout 3. How is it?

.Chris wrote on December 7, 2008, 9:41pm

andrei030, this site is to provide feedback for windows vista and windows 7. as well as mac osx

Arayta wrote on December 8, 2008, 12:07am

@andrei: Changing exclusively to 64bit is a very radical change... we're just requesting a very simple feature that would make Windows a lot easier.

andrei030 wrote on December 8, 2008, 12:28am

@Arayta "By the way, I see you have Fallout 3. How is it?"

I thought that because it wasn't made by Interplay will not be as entertaining as Fallout 1 and 2 but I have to say that is a very good game it didn't disappointed me.

Totally agree. The Up button should come back, Back button doesn't cut it and it doesn't help sometimes.

S-V.P.A.M. wrote on December 31, 2008, 7:36pm

Nobody can be against an up button as an OPTION.
Please Microsoft, bring the up button back. Only for those, who wants the up button.

So everybody would be happy.
