Improved Registry Editor

Submitted by CypherBit on November 2, 2008 to Usability

Registry Editor hasn't been updated in a long time and it shows.

Add search functionality such as Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) wildcards, regular expressions, by date search (newer than, older than).
Show all results at once, perhaps in a separate tab so we don't have to F3 all the way.

I wouldn't mind if a RegJump like function would be added by default.

I dont know why anyone would demote this...... but its a good idea. Might require a rebuild but I wouldnt even mind a new icon. The current one has been around since 3.1 days

Great idea.

I think it should be done as an MMC plugin (makes the most sense considering the nature of the tool). But I'd also like to see a vista style search.

The endless tree structure is also very difficult to navigate, even when you know where you're going.

Perhaps offer a nicer GUI for exploring Registry Keys, and a front end way of viewing all registry entries created or modifyed by application or company name such as Adobe or Macromedia.

It would be helpful for removing registry entries, or restoring to default modifyed entries when uninstalling applications.

I think the Registry should be "mounted" into the Explorer like a normal folder so you can handle every key as folder and values as files and you have all the features (quick search etc.) you have in Explorer

My biggest gripe is that you can't specify a key on the command line to jump to, followed by being unable to copy and paste registry keys (handy if, for instance, someone somehow manages to delete the 'open' command on the Folder class, which actually has happened in the past)

This would be nice, if only they fixed all the other major UI problems first. The vast majority of individuals have no need to enter the registry editor.

Yay! Add a breadcrumb bar too.
These improvements are also needed in the mammoth Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc)

LOL. All these ideas spell a gigantic project for the Win7 team.

+1

adding a more user friendly registry editor might almost encourage unexperienced users to edit it

it could be bad if some one messes with the system without knowing what they are doing

Then what about an advanced mode?

I still say once windows 7 ships, the team puts the idea of a rewrite in to full force. but this rewrite wont come in 2-3 years, more like 5-10. (Windows, 30th birthday). it wont have a regestery, or if it does, it will be far more advanced. Aero will be taken to the next level etc.

i'd like to see a registry cleaner implemented.. windows does a terrible job of cleaning it's own registry when you uninstall apps or delete files and it slows the system to a crawl over time

Meanwhile, there's a fantastic Regjump like but with GUI tool called Registry Jumper (http://www.eolsoft.com/freeware/registry_jumper/)
