Windows Media Player 12 randomly stutters playback

Submitted by pasty2k2 on April 17, 2009 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

When using WMP, it seems to hang for a long period of time, whether it is playing anything or not. The UI becomes unresponsive, and if its playing an audio or video file, itll just sit there, as if paused, and then resume when it catches up with itself (can be anywhere between a second and 20).

This is common to all builds up to 7077, x86 and x64 flavours tried. I have not used any drivers, only those bundled with windows, with the exception of installing realtek hd audio codec 2.21 recently. No change.

I do have a pretty large library, consisting only of audio files though. They are either MP3/128k, or Windows Media Audio Lossless 9.2. Total size is about 15000 files, 240GB ish.

Fix it - not sure what was broken, and how it hasnt been brought up before. Maybe its just my machine, but its a pretty standard build, Vista worked fine on it (I used x64).
