Temporarily disable the Aero Snap

Submitted by JK on March 9, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

The Aero Snap is really cool, but it can be truly annoying. You cannot drag windows out of the screen, you cannot resize nor move big windows around at all, as they get "sticked" super easily. It effectively decreases the size of your screen.

Microsoft already has intuitive and known solution used in majority products couple of years - hold the control key. Whenever you hold ctrl key while dragging around toolbars or tool windows, the docking feature is temporarily disabled. I suggest this behavior for the Aero Snap feature too.

Introducing an user option to turn this feature permanently on or off is indeed not reasonable. If you think it is, vote on http://www.windows7taskforce.com/view/667 instead.

Can't hurt. +1

That's what I thought. It does not require any UI, does not cause any localization troubles, does not change current behavior and the design is proven.

+1. With so many modifier keys to choose from, there can be an accessibility option. Disable Aero Snap while dragging when (Ctrl/Alt/Shift/Ctrl+Alt/Ctrl+Shift) key is held down.
