Submitted by Indrek on February 26, 2009 to Aesthetics, Legacy

The "Page Setup" dialog uses an outdated image for the page preview.
See screenshot (dialog opened from Notepad).

Update the image.

Ok, I'll bite. What's outdated about the image?

.Chris wrote on February 26, 2009, 5:20pm

@ larry

it should match with the rest or merge with the print window

also, this is different from wordpad. Wordpad uses a larger window with the "preview" on top

So theres a LOT of inconstancy larry.

but I agree, its not outdated, but it should be mergerd with the print window

@Larry: pretty much everything about it. The fact that it's a pixel drawing. Failure to utilise any gradients or alpha transparency.
Try opening Word 2007 and comparing the above to the images that appear in the Page Layout -> Margins dropdown menu.

Chris: That's strange. I launched my copy of Wordpad and the image in wordpad is identical to the image here. The dialog is laid out differently but the image is identical.

And I don't see how alpha transparency or gradients would improve the image - it still effectively gets the message forward. I guess that the drop shadow looks a bit clunky but it's no more or less "outdated" than many of the other graphics in Windows.

so you admit there are old graphics still in Windows? Perhaps its time to upgrade them?

Indrek wrote on February 27, 2009, 8:25am

@Larry: yes, the image is the same. It's the layout that differs from application to application.

Also, many of the old 9x/2k era icons get the message forward just fine. Doesn't mean Windows should just keep using them. It's not the functional side of the graphic that's the issue, it's the visual side. To me, it doesn't fit with Aero. Some people agree, some disagree. That's why we have this site in the first place.

_Chris: I've never said there weren't old graphics in WIndows. There are literally thousands of pieces of artwork in Windows and there's no way that they all get updated in each release.

True, but with help of this site, you can start working on it
