Windows 7 does not allow indexing of network shares from DNS-323

Submitted by r3ferrei on February 24, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Windows 7 (and i believe XP and Vista as well) does not allow you to index shares that exist on my Dlink NAS (DNS-323). The hard drives are formatted by the NAS with EXT-2 file system.

This prevents me from assigning a directory on the NAS to a library location.

There has been a previous submission of this error related to NAS shares, however, this one is more specific. Here is the referenced submission:

When it comes to music, I noticed a way to get a music directory part of your library.

If you use the Zune software to manage your music, if you specify a NAS directory as your main music location within the Zune software, that location shows up in your music library.

This, so far, is the only way i have been able to get a network location on the library from my DNS-323.

This is what Federated Search is for. However, you need the infrastructure on the NAS to do the searching for you then return the results in RSS.

Yes, I've noticed that Win7 doesn't like building indexes (oh, all right, "indices") on networked locations in general (wonder if that extends to Windows Home Server? I understand it's supposed to be supporting the "Libraries" feature later this year).

This is too specific. Windows 7 should index network shares, period.
@logic_earth, if the NAS had infrastructure to search itself, we wouldn't need Windows Search.. this is about searching our external drives with the Windows index.

Don't expect Microsoft to index other file systems like Ext2/3 but for Vista there WAS a search addin for FAT and NTFS shares that worked as advertised and indexed the network without requiring Windows Search to be installed on the remote PC. Sadly that addin does not on Windows 7 and MS doesn't care apparently about updating it. +1.
