More gadgets

Submitted by andrei030 on February 19, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

There are almost no gadgets except the ones that comes by default. If you search the Live Gallery all the gadgets there are ugly and senseless, I didn't find even one useful, is also impossible to find a Flickr slideshow gadget.

More gadgets from Microsoft, of course, and the gadgets should pass a selection process or/and a quality process, the Live Gallery is a shame.

Someone could submit this via feedback from Windows 7 beta, I don't have it installed to submit it by myself.

I'm people have....

I'd also like to see them update the existing ones

That would be better, almost 95% of the gadgets on live gallery are ugly.

I think they should only filter the gadgets on the Windows Live site, not all gadgets period. Otherwise it would be no better then Apple's app store, where a lot of good apps are denied because Apple doesn't like them. For example, you can't get a different internet bowser for the iPhone because Apple want's you to use Safari. And I'm sure there are other usful apps that got denied as well.

So, I say that the gadget scene should remain free and open, just like any other software for Windows, and the only quality filter should be on the Windows Live gadget site.

I'll vote this up, though I consider it more of a weakness in the Windows ecosystem as a whole, and not so much Win7 itself.

It's the old chicken-and-egg thing. Not many users use gadgets yet, because there have been few really compelling ones. Worse, Sidebar is an awful cycle-suck in Vista, and a great many users have disabled it entirely.

The good news here is that from everything I've seen so far, Gadgets work MUCH better in Win7 than they do in Vista. That should bring more users on board. With that wider audience, I suspect developers will pay more attention to the platform.

And I agree with Arayta; the only evaluation I want Microsoft to perform on new Gadgets is to ensure they don't breach system security. Other than that, the field should be wide open.

@Arayta of course I was only talking about the Windows Live site, I'm totally agree that you can install gadgets that aren't on Windows web site, but the Windows Gallery must be filtered.

The filed should not be to wide open, like it is now. You guys say your self, most of them suck, so if we left the door wide open, it will just contune to be like this, unless theres some sort of control, and it doesnt need to be like the apple app store

Arayta wrote on February 21, 2009, 3:34am

@.Chris: Again, we're talking about leaving the *platform* wide open. If you want only the best of the best, then you would go to the Windows Live Gadget Gallery and take your pick. If you wanted to choose from a wider range of gadgets, then you would go to a third party site. Aren't you the one who's always shoving the idea of options down everyone's throat?

WOW Chris. Wow. You always misinterpret what people say. For example, someone will be completely calm in their comment, and you say something like "calm down, geez." I'm really surprised no one has ever called you out on that. I took that personally? Where is there any indication in that comment that I took it personally? You're always telling people to chill out when they were never even hot in the first place. It's getting pretty annoying.

By the way, that ^ is what a comment looks like from someone who is annoyed. Using mild language doesn't mean they're pissed or raging or whatever you read it as. >,>

Hm, and now you deleted your comment. Congratulations, Chris.

+1. More high quality and really useful in-box gadgets are needed. Why is the excellent Search Indexer gadget not built-in? How about one for changing volume, launching apps and birthdays and anniversaries? What happened to the egg timer gadget which was there in the Vista betas? I don't feel like using the mostly ugly gadgets on gallery.live.com. I agree that the gadget website needs to be open to everyone but how about a "Featured gadgets" section on that site that handpicks the best looking and most useful gadgets?
