Allow all apps to have their taskbar icon

Submitted by Dubya on January 25, 2009 to Icons, Usability

Flexibility is needed to choose whether an app is pinned to the relevant taksbar icon jumplist, or to have its own taskbar icon. Things like Recycle bin: I like to see the Recycle Bin in the Taskbar instead of having to pin it to the Windows Explorer jumplist and having to use multiple clicks to access and empty it. The only alternative at the moment is having it on the desktop.

Allow more flexibility in pinning apps to the taskbar.

A global shortcut like on the Mac to empty the Recycle Bin would be pretty sweet too.

Mac uses Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Backspace to empty the Trash. Seems like a pretty safe combination to use.

I'm asking myself how this should be done. Don't get me wrong, I think this suggestion is very valid because this is just what the users expect. But otherwise it offends against the overall philosophy of having just one icon per application on the taskbar. Also it seems not to be intended to have places like folders on the taskbar, only application and therefore there is just one icon for the explorer, too. The recycle bin belongs to the explorer and folders do also.

Maybe there should be an separated area for Icons like that. This is also the way this is made for the dock in Mac OS X.

+ 1 anyway even if I wouldn't use it because I like my taskbar to be as clean as possible and in the Jumplist I can add a lot of folders without cluttering my taskbar with them.

Haven't tried it yet but can't you use the Recycle Bin folder as a toolbar in the new taskbar?

I agree with RedSign: It may be not possible because all Explorer windows are displayed with one icon. That's the concept.

If the recycle bin can be pinned at the taskbar ppl can drag stuff easely into it without minimizing all windows :-D

I always get frustrated about that...
