No easy way to move documents and application data to a separate partition / disk.

Submitted by NIXin on November 2, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

If something bad happens to the system, you can't just do a full recovery because by default all documents, photos, music, etc. are on the main, system partition. If the user or OEMs could move the "Users" folder easily (during the OS installation?) (more...)

Add a way to change the default location of Users folder (possibly during installation)

Drive letters change

Submitted by NIXin on November 2, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

Partition/drive letters change when you do one of the following things:
Example [A]:
1. Plug in your drive -> Windows assigns G:
2. Remove the drive
3. Insert a second drive -> Windows will once again assign G:
4. (more...)

Always reserve the drive letter set up for a device by partition's GUID and remove that reservation only if there are no more drive letters available (eg. all filled up from C: to Z:).

Another solution: Switch to GUID identification (more...)

Submitted by NIXin on November 2, 2008 to Aesthetics, Legacy

A lot of windows still use legacy colors. There's not much to explain, here are two examples:
- the background color is gray in "Virtual Memory" and in "Performance Options" it's almost white)
- the create new (more...)

Use consistant colors throughout whole Windows

Administrative Tools window opens in a new window

Submitted by NIXin on November 2, 2008 to Aesthetics, Legacy

Just like the title says it. When you open up Control Panel, type "Administrative" in search box. When you click Administrative Tools, the folder opens up a legacy "Administrative Tools" window, instead of the new Control Panel look (more...)

Use the same Control Panel look and feel for Administrative Tools or at least open them in the same window.

[!] Windows hangs for a while when performing disk operations [!]

Submitted by NIXin on November 2, 2008 to Bug, Usability

This is a severe low-level design problem. Applies to all of Windows and most software written for Windows. Vista made some progress with this, but still, it doesn't work as it should.
The problem:
Let's say you have a badly scratched (more...)

Reimplement disk access.
Don't wait for one disk/network operation to complete in order to continue - multitask!
Asynchronous I/O is the answer here.

Very slow and buggy rendering in Internet Explorer when using non-standard DPI (also zoom feature)

Submitted by NIXin on November 2, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Usability

The problem is with Internet Explorer's resizing functions.
Example: Just try to open a couple of tabs, some of them at 100% zoom level and the some at 125% or more and try switching between them a couple of times.
You'll see (more...)

Fix and optimize the zoom feature or reimplement it.

CD/DVD spin up at Windows boot

Submitted by NIXin on November 2, 2008 to Annoyance

Ever since Windows XP, if there are any CD's or DVD's in your tray at boot time, they spin up when the system is booting (when the first progressbar appears). The same still applies to Windows 7. When you're on laptop, that's a waste (more...)

Spin up the CD or DVD currently in tray only when required (ie. when you open up "Computer" to read it's label).
