Due to the stupidity of Long (that's me), all comments on the Windows 7 Taskforce after March has been lost.
As a result of this unfortunate event, a transition to a new backend (the one powering heresanidea.net) is being considered.

Do not steal keyclicks when asking user to reboot or postpone windows updates

Submitted by dsmtoday on January 22, 2010 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

I ran Windows Update today. It wanted to reboot my machine, so it popped up a box asking me if I wanted to reboot or postpone 10 minutes. I ignored it (meaning I didn't click postpone or anything else), instead clicked on Firefox, and continued (more...)

Do not ever steal focus by bringing this window to the foreground, which will end up stealing keyclicks intended for another application. Just make it activate a blinking icon in the toolbar or something, like it does when something needs process elevation.

"Your homegroup password couldn't be printed"

Submitted by dsmtoday on November 3, 2009 to Annoyance, Bug

I can print just fine. But setting up a homegroup the first time, I tried to "Print this page" from the homegroup screen, and got the error in the picture.

Googling around, I find I'm not the only one that has this problem (more...)

Ended up using the snip tool, capturing the window, and printing that from a graphic editor.

Backup falsely claims an error when not backing up remote shares attached through Libraries

Submitted by dsmtoday on September 17, 2009 to Annoyance, Bug

I attached a share on which I have MP3s to my Music Library. That part works fine.

The problem comes when I run Backup. I have Backup backing up my Libraries. Of course, Backup skips over the the share because it only backs up stuff (more...)

Skipping over network shares should not be flagged as an incomplete backup. Instead, when setting up the backup in the first place, the software could warn that it isn't going to back up the network share attached to my Music Library.

Panel for selecting Indexed Locations for searches falsely shows drives not being indexed

Submitted by dsmtoday on September 17, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

In the attached picture, note how there is no checkmark next to the C: drive. That is fine, I'm not indexing the entire drive, but this view falsely implies that nothing on this drive is being indexed. When I expand the drive by clicking on that (more...)

In every other application Microsoft has written in the past, they handle this problem by using a grayed checkmark next to the drive, indicating that something inside has been selected, but not the entire drive.

Explorer items jump all over the place when clicked after Active Title Bar size set to 17

Submitted by dsmtoday on September 13, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Usability

This one is a little obscure, but totally repeatable. At first I thought this was a serious bug with explorer items jumping all over the place when clicking them, but I figured out the issue is caused by setting the Active Title Bar size to the bare (more...)

Either the icons can't be allows to inflate the width of the Explorer menu strip, or the minimum Active Title Bar size needs to be reset to 18. Set at 18, the problem has vanished. Most likely, there is a very deep issue involved in calculating (more...)

User's mapped drives disappear when elevating to administrator privelege level

Submitted by dsmtoday on August 17, 2009 to Bug

This happens to me on a Domain with shares that require a Domain login. Could also possibly happen in Workgroup or Homegroup, but I haven't checked.

Under WinXP, I ran as a user in the local Administrator group. I had several mapped (more...)

Somehow, a user's drive mappings need to make it thru Administrator privilege elevation.

Returning from Switch User buggy if you have one monitor atop the other

Submitted by dsmtoday on August 17, 2009 to Bug, Usability

I have a four monitor setup where three are next to each other and one is on top of my main monitor. If I login as UserA, then use CTL+ALT+DEL to Switch User, then at that point decide to just pick UserA again and relogin, there is a 50/50 chance that (more...)

Submitted by dsmtoday on August 9, 2009 to Website suggestions

Firefox 3.5.2 w/ NoScript plugin, but with exceptions for this site.

Here is what I get back from the server after I try to submit a comment. It appears that my comment does get published, though.

Aero snap vertical maximize buggy if you have one monitor atop the other

Submitted by dsmtoday on August 8, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug

I have a four monitor setup where three are next to each other and one is on top of my main monitor. The problem is that the automatic vertical maximize feature of aero snap will maximize the window from the bottom of my main screen to the top of the (more...)

The vertical maximize feature should only snap within one monitor, not across multiple monitors.
