Due to the stupidity of Long (that's me), all comments on the Windows 7 Taskforce after March has been lost.
As a result of this unfortunate event, a transition to a new backend (the one powering heresanidea.net) is being considered.

"Programs and Features" uninstaller still only allows one uninstall at a time

Submitted by sfsdfd on June 29, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

The Control Panel "Programs and Features" widget still only allows one uninstall at a time.

This might be understandable, e.g., for OS patches, which probably need to occur in a transactional manner - so it's probably a bad (more...)

Reconfigure the "Programs and Features" uninstaller service to allow concurrent uninstalls (so long as they don't involve updates to the same items.)

Windows 7 refuses to unmount storage devices, even when not in use

Submitted by sfsdfd on June 29, 2009 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

W7 often refuses to unmount storage devices with a "can't stop your device because a program is still using it" message - even, in many circumstances, when no actual program is using it. As a result, I'm forced to yank the hardware (more...)

Reconfigure the "device in use" logic of this widget to be more accurate.

Also, reconfigure the dialog to show the names of applications or services that are (ostensibly) still using the device.

Just a question... is MS actually considering our Taskforce submissions?

Submitted by sfsdfd on June 29, 2009 to Annoyance, Bug, Website suggestions

I just noticed something, uh, interesting. Looking over there ---> and clicking on the "Status" categories produces some pretty disheartening results.

At present:

(1) Only one item is "under review" (more...)

Um... "the solution is left as an exercise for the reader." ;)

MS Paint: When a block of an image is selected, "Select" button should be relabeled "Move"

Submitted by sfsdfd on June 29, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

In Paint, when a chunk of image is selected or pasted, the functionality of the cursor changes from a Select operation to a Move operation. This is helpful, of course.

However, the selected button still indicates "Select." This (more...)

Simply relabel the "Select" button to "Move" when a selection has been made.

Multiple copy buffers

Submitted by sfsdfd on June 28, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

So it's 2009. We all use copy and paste a hundred times a day.

However, we still have no default functionality for multiple copy buffers. So, every time I want to swap two items, I can't just do this:

select item (more...)

The obvious solution is to implement multiple copy buffers, bound to different hotkey combinations.

Unbinding F1 from Windows Help and Support

Submitted by sfsdfd on June 28, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

OK... confession time: I never, ever use Windows Help.

I don't disagree with it in principle. It is a very helpful document for explaining options to new and less experienced users. But I've been using Windows since the days of (more...)

PLEASE let me uncouple F1 from Windows Help and Support. Thanks!

Internet Explorer needs a "save files in this location by default" option

Submitted by sfsdfd on June 28, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Whenever I request to save an object in IE, I'm greeted with the standard "Save As" box.

I understand that this is somewhat consistent with other apps - e.g., office apps never know where you want to save your document or (more...)

One of two possible solutions here (neither of which compromises the default "Save "As" behavior):

(1) Create a separate context menu option for "Save," to mimic the typical "Save" functionality of office (more...)

Bug: [Win]+[number] hotkeys map to taskbar entries as if grouped... even if grouping is disabled

Submitted by sfsdfd on June 28, 2009 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

Vista started the trend of co-opting the [Win]+[number] hotkey combination. These hotkeys referred to icons in the Quick Launch toolbar: [Win]+1 activated the first Quick Launch icon; [Win]+2 activated the second; etc. Not a bad idea, although I never (more...)

When the user has unchecked the "group taskbar entries" option, reconfigure the [Win]+[number] hotkey combination to match the actual taskbar entries instead of the (nonexistent) groups.

Junctions in Explorer: when double-clicked, navigate to the referenced folder

Submitted by sfsdfd on June 28, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

The Vista FS introduced (or, at least, made heavier use of) junctions.

Junctions are like hard-coded, undeletable folder shortcuts that point to other locations. The idea here is that when a filesystem standard changes - e.g., when MS decides (more...)

When a user double-clicks a junction, navigate the Explorer window to the folder targeted by the junction.

Relocate the view options for the Control Panel to the Explorer "View" menu

Submitted by sfsdfd on June 28, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

All of the view options in the Control Panel menu are disabled. Instead, there is a widget, way over on the right of the Control Panel, that allows toggling of the view among three states. (I didn't even notice this until the users below pointed (more...)

Relocate the functionality of the "View By" combo box to the Explorer menu bar, and remove the widget.

Allow per-drive (and per-folder?) customization of Low Disk Space Notifications

Submitted by sfsdfd on June 28, 2009 to Usability

I like that Windows has a low disk space notification service, but it's pretty primitive. In fact, its functionality has not changed since Windows 95! We have only two options: let it do its thing, or disable it completely.

It would (more...)

Create a small dialog to allow users to customize the "Low Disk Space Notification" service.

Icon notifications bug: options for "Bluetooth Devices" and "Low Disk Space" change together

Submitted by sfsdfd on June 28, 2009 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

The improved ability to control the notification area is great, guys. I really like it.

However, there's a small bug here: changing the option for "Windows Explorer - Bluetooth Devices" automatically changes the option for (more...)

Reconfigure these two services to use different options, and/or fix the data binding error in the "Customize Notifications" dialog.

Quick Launch toolbar bug: icons spontaneously rearrange into fewer rows

Submitted by sfsdfd on June 28, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Usability

(I tried Superbar - really, I did. And I hate it with an undying passion, for many reasons... this (more...)

Consistent, permament Explorer view preference

Submitted by sfsdfd on June 28, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Explorer offers many views: Small Icons, Large Icons, List, Details, Tiles, Content, etc. This is a good and healthy trend.

Explorer also has an option to apply a particular view to all folders. This is also good.

Windows (more...)

Bring back option to show folder path in title of Explorer window

Submitted by sfsdfd on June 28, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

The Explorer window and the Internet Explorer window have a big UI inconsistency. Consider the image below.

Windows Vista nuked the option of displaying the folder path in the Explorer window title. I never understood why Microsoft did (more...)

Create an option in the Properties section of Explorer to display the folder path in the title bar, and respect the user's preferences.
