Long Zheng : Register Windows8Taskforce.com?
Well since the recent talk of Windows 8 (Even if that is its codename, it is just good reason to assume that Windows 8 will follow Windows 7 to stay logical), I think it would be a good idea to at least register windows8taskforce.com because I am sure (more...)
Register it now! ;P

GDI+ Acceleration in Windows 7 is broken
OK, this is rather difficult for me to explain, but I will try to explan this issue as detailed as possible.
Because I am a developer I frequently disable the theme service, or just run in Aero basic mode on Windows 7 to make sure all my (more...)
A simple solution, Enable acceleration of traditional GDI model like in Vista and XP. It was fine then, dont break it so we have to move to Direct2D or WPF.

Replace the Color 1 and Color 2 with Stroke and Fill (external patch)
In the new Windows 7 Paint, very oddly the colors have been kept as Color 1 and Color 2. This is very annoying. Therefore I have created a very simple and easy patch which replaces these texts with Stroke and Fill.
Fix is avaliable for download here : http://elementsoftware.co.uk/dev/jakejackson/mods/windows7paintpatch/

Alignment in Programs and Features is wrong
The alignment in the UI of the programs and features control panel is wrong. Firstly the toolbar should be aligned at the top of the window, below the address bar to remain consistent with explorer and IE, instead it is in the middle half way down.
Make it more consistent with the rest of Windows, by moving the toolbar so it is always at the top, like explorer, remove the uneeded title and expand the list box where the white space was.
This also applies to the font control panel, (more...)

Update Phone Dialer UI *UPDATED*
The Phone Dialer UI (also includes an old icon) is horribly outdated and does not match Windows 7 Styling.
Update the UI to Windows 7 styling, or better still, make it look more like the new calculator wich has a very nice interface
See my actual working mockup for details!

Integrate Internet Options into control panel
Why does all the options of Internet Explorer have to be buried into inetcpl?
Alot of the functionality in this dialog also changes some system wide settings, so it would be more suited surely to be integrated into the control panel.
Integrate Internet Options into the control panel, and create a link to inetcpl.cpl to the new control panel so web browsers that use it (i.e avant) dont break when it is called upon
See my mockup for an example of this.

Why does MSCONFIG.EXE have to be buried? And why was Software Explorer removed from Defender
Since Software Explorer was removed from defender (And god knows why microsoft did it ????) I have been using msconfig to manage startup entries.
Trouble is i have to manually type it, create a shortcut to it or run the app in the system32 (more...)
Unbury it, put it in control panel under advanced settings, or even better, LET US HAVE SOFTWARE EXPLORER BACK.
What were they thinking????

Why the redudant (and old) add new hardware exe applet?
Windows already provides a completely new hardware management feature and dialogs, so why is this old Add Hardware exe still kept in the system32 folder?
Either remove it since it is not called upon anywhere in the control panel or windows or update it to match aero style or simply make it launch the new hardware wizard

Proposed update (mockup) for the sysdm.cpl applet
The sysdm.cpl in Vista and Windows 7 is essentially the same sysdm.cpl that was found in XP, minus the tab with the windows logo on it and the system information (it was integrated into a fake page in control panel)
However we are left (more...)
Update it so that it is easier to use and settings are presented as more easier to get to. (This wouldnt even be needed to be integrated into control panel, just left where it is but do what they did with UAC, put it in another control panel of its own)

Mockup for Windows Internet Explorer 8 Welcome
The current IE8 First run wizard is very scratchy and some of the icons are pixellated.
Update the IE 8 first run to be more user friendly and more aesthetically pleasing.
See my mockup for a suggestion.

Update the DXDIAG to be more useful and automatic
The Dxdiag interface (the main DirectX interface, and just about the only UI avaliable for DirectX) is as old as I can remember. I think it is about time for it to be updated too, and make it more helpful for a user to solve problems with thier games.
As seen in my mockup, DXDiag could automatically check the users computer settings, run some tests and then use Windows Action Center to resolve any problems that has been found. It could also apply patches to peoples games with further integration with (more...)
