More control over file locations and profiles - allow a single user setup

Submitted by Corgrim on April 8, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Windows allows multiple users, each with their own profile. This is handy, thought it seems to cause problems of its own. Windows does this in part by creating folders for each user within \documents and settings. This is true even if there is only (more...)

Allow greater control over where files end up. Allow for a setup with only one user - no extra folders for others.

Offline files for home users

Submitted by Corgrim on April 8, 2009 to Usability

Offline files is a fantastically useful tool for synchronizing laptop files with a server. As more people have home servers/NASs, it would be very useful to have this ability built into (or installable for) home/basic versions of the OS

Allow 'offline files' capability for all versions of the OS.

^T / Process explorer

Submitted by Corgrim on April 8, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

It used to be that on the DEC PDP 11/70, Ctrl-T would tell you (in one line) what your terminal was doing. These days, the task manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) does that. Too often, however, the Task Manager tells me that absolutely nothing is happening, when (more...)

Provide more accurate Task Manager.

Real ^C/ Ctrl-Alt-Del interrupt

Submitted by Corgrim on April 8, 2009 to Usability

Way back when, Ctrl+C would interrupt whatever your computer was doing and give you control. Ctrl-Alt-Del took its place. But these days, Ctrl-Alt-Del brings up a menu of choices, and sometimes it doesn't even do that. I don't so much mind (more...)

Instant response from Ctrl-Alt-Del

Use descriptive file names

Submitted by Corgrim on April 8, 2009 to Usability

While Windows has long allowed long file names, system files tend to still be called wksdy2ha.dll, etc (yes, I made that one up). It's frustrating to run across this when trying to figure out the purpose of a particular file. Could Windows 7 not (more...)

Use longer, more descriptive names.

Task bar on the side

Submitted by Corgrim on April 8, 2009 to Annoyance

It's great that the task bar can be placed on the side, rather than at the bottom, especially as screens get shorter and wider. However, Windows tends to re-size the task bar at every start up.

Ensure system retains width of task bar when placed on right or left side.
