Never hide file extension for executable files

Submitted by limulus on May 12, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

The problem with executable files masking as documents when "Hide file extensions" is turned on has been around for a decade. Virus writers use a standard document icon as the executable's main icon resource and an inconspicuous filename (more...)

Various solutions to this problem have been proposed, including confirmation dialogs and UAC options. However, there is a *MUCH* simpler way to contain this threat:

Never hide the file extension for executable files, EVEN if the option (more...)

[MICROSOFT] Create a Windows Future Forum (Petition)

Submitted by limulus on April 30, 2009 to Website suggestions

You know the drill. This has been stated before. Microsoft needs to create an OFFICIAL forum system, ideally modelled after the Windows Taskforce or Dell's IdeaStorm, where people can submit their suggestions in a streamlined way AND THEY ARE ACTED (more...)

Sign the petition at http://petitionspot.com/petitions/windowsfutureforum . Spread the word and place a link (more...)

[WEBSITE] Automatically delete suggestions with a score of -15 or worse

Submitted by limulus on April 9, 2009 to Website suggestions

Some suggestions are just abysmally stupid, others are outright spam.

Examples:

Spam: "my boyfriend was the one who spammed" (http://www.windows7taskforce.com/view/1463)

What these "suggestions" all have in common is an extremely low rating. The community isn't stupid. If the balanced score (+promotions -demotions) is -15 or worse you can be sure the suggestion is either rubbish, insulting, spam, or all (more...)

[WEBSITE] Let the community flag the "Fixed" status

Submitted by limulus on April 8, 2009 to Website suggestions

If you look into the "Fixed" category you will find precisely two entries.

However, a much larger number of suggestions HAVE been fixed (as evident by the problem description, by comments or by the label "[FIXED]" added (more...)

A powerful solution to the problem: Let the COMMUNITY vote on whether something has been fixed. Once 5 people have marked a suggestion as fixed, change its status.

Once this feature is added, the community will weed out the fixed ones in (more...)

Submitted by limulus on April 8, 2009 to Bug, Website suggestions

First post in the new "Website suggestions" category! Thanks to Long Zheng for creating it.

There is a small bug on the page "My comments". At the bottom (next to the page buttons) it displays (for me) something like (more...)

Should be obvious.

[WEBSITE] Create "Website" category

Submitted by limulus on April 8, 2009 to Annoyance, Website suggestions

It seems that about one in ten suggestions on windows7taskforce.com is a suggestion that concerns the WEBSITE rather than Windows 7.

This is not what the suggestion system was created for; it interferes with Windows suggestions. Also, some (more...)

Create a "website" category where all suggestions for the windows7taskforce.com website go. Delete all newly posted site suggestions that don't have the category set (or, less strict, set the category for them).

Also, add (more...)

Closing laptop should NOT hibernate after shutdown has been ordered

Submitted by limulus on April 8, 2009 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

When I physically close my laptop computer, Windows goes into hibernation, which is a good thing since it saves battery power.

However, this also happens if I close the laptop shortly AFTER ordering it to shut down. The shutdown is interrupted (more...)

Once a system shutdown has been ordered, disable the service that puts the system into hibernation when the laptop is being physically closed.
