Make use of built-in temperature sensors

Submitted by Indrek on June 10, 2009 to Usability

Windows 7 supposedly has a nice sensor framework, which already works with stuff like fingerprint sensors, ambient light sensors, accelerometers etc. But how about also using it to support the temperature sensors that most modern motherboards, CPUs, GPUs (more...)

Add support for built-in temperature sensors, and allow the readings to be monitored in real-time. For extra cool points, expose the data through the gadget API.

Some other ideas:
- keep logs and allow users to view past temperatures (more...)

Properties dialogs in IE use legacy icons

Submitted by Indrek on February 26, 2009 to Icons, Legacy

Screenshot and title say it all.
In IE, go to Page -> Properties or right-click on an image or hyperlink and select Properties. Now marvel at the 256-colour, pre-XP icons.

Full-size screenshot here:

Use proper Aero-style icons. I'm sure Windows already includes suitable ones.

[7022] Low-res icons in start menu (Run, Connect projector, Media Player)

Submitted by Indrek on February 25, 2009 to Icons

In build 7022, the following icons in the start menu don't seem to have 256x256 versions:
Run
Connect to a projector
Windows Media Player (funny thing is, I could've sworn it had a large icon in build 7000)

Add hi-res versions.

When moving a file, Windows doesn't check if it's in use until the end of the operation

Submitted by Indrek on December 10, 2009 to Annoyance, Bug

Like the title says, if you ask Windows to move a file, it'll happily oblige, even if the file is in use. The reason for this, as I understand it, is that Windows first copies the file over to the destination, and then tries to delete it from the (more...)

Check to see if the file is in use *before* starting to move it, and if it is, alert the user.

Alternatively, upon showing the message that the file is in use, allow the user to say "OK, let's just copy it instead". Should (more...)

In album view, use both album name and artist name to group songs, as opposed to just album name.

WMP - provide detailed status when updating library

Submitted by Indrek on June 10, 2009 to Usability

Occasionally I find WMP hacking away at my hard drive, claiming to be updating the media library. I'd like to be able to find out why it's doing that, especially since to the best of my knowledge the library hasn't changed since the last (more...)
