Opening items in Device Stage functions like Explorer

Submitted by Indrek on January 19, 2010 to Annoyance, Usability

Currently, Device Stage functions like Windows Explorer - items need to be double-clicked to open them, and you have those selection checkboxes, which by the way are useless (you cannot select more than one item, and even if you could, there's nothing (more...)

Make it function like Control Panel - the selection rectangle is applied on mouseover, and the titles function like links, ie. click once to open.

In IE's "Add a Favourite" dialog box, Ctrl+Backspace produces weird symbols

Submitted by Indrek on December 11, 2009 to Bug

Just like the title says. Press Ctrl+D in IE to open the "Add a Favourite" dialog (or open it from the Favourites bar) and press Ctrl+Backspace. Witness it produce the rectangle symbol that's usually shown when the codepage used doesn't (more...)

Fix it.

When moving a file, Windows doesn't check if it's in use until the end of the operation

Submitted by Indrek on December 10, 2009 to Annoyance, Bug

Like the title says, if you ask Windows to move a file, it'll happily oblige, even if the file is in use. The reason for this, as I understand it, is that Windows first copies the file over to the destination, and then tries to delete it from the (more...)

Check to see if the file is in use *before* starting to move it, and if it is, alert the user.

Alternatively, upon showing the message that the file is in use, allow the user to say "OK, let's just copy it instead". Should (more...)

Javascript errors

Submitted by Indrek on August 10, 2009 to Bug, Website suggestions

There's a few Javascript errors on the site that prevent some things like voting on a submission, editing a comment or unsubscribing from email notifications from working.

Webpage error details

User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (more...)

As a workaround, either disable InPrivate Filtering or set it to the "Choose..." setting, then allow "jquery.min.js" from googleapis.com.

IE doesn't properly resample images when scaled a second time

Submitted by Indrek on July 27, 2009 to Bug

Okay, this one's a bit hard to sum up in a few sentences, so I'll just list the steps to reproduce:

1) in IE, open an image that's too large to be displayed in the browser window (so it'll be scaled). Like this:

Properly resample images every time they're scaled.

Sending file via infrared - legacy icons and graphics

Submitted by Indrek on June 29, 2009 to Icons, Legacy

When sending a file via infrared, the progress dialog features old graphics and animation. It also doesn't seem to be able to display the name of the connected device. See screenshot below.
Also, the tray icon is old, as is the icon in the (more...)

Fix it, if only for the sake of the 15 people who still use infrared and haven't switched to something more modern like Bluetooth.

Typo in Confirm Toolbar Close dialog

Submitted by Indrek on June 28, 2009 to Bug

The Confirm Toolbar Close dialog says "To add a toolbar to your desktop..."

Funny, I never knew I could add toolbars to the desktop. Taskbar, yes, and I think that's what this dialog means to say.

Fix the typo.

Also, it doesn't quite follow the Aero guidelines. The main instructions should be in large (I forget what the exact size is) blue Segoe UI and present a question to the user. For instance, "Are you sure you want (more...)

Desktop background not restored after activation when grace period has expired

Submitted by Indrek on June 20, 2009 to Bug

When the grace period for activating Windows expires, Windows changes the desktop background to black. When the user subsequently activates Windows, the wallpaper isn't restored.

Restore the wallpaper after successful activation.

WinSAT: show changes after re-running benchmark

Submitted by Indrek on June 20, 2009 to Usability

WinSAT can alert you if you need to re-run the benchmark due to hardware (or often, driver) changes, but there's no way of directly seeing if the scores actually changed as well. Seeing that information would help decide whether or not a particular (more...)

Let the user view the previous WinSAT score after re-running benchmark.

Better yet, keep a history of previous scores and allow the user to browse them.

Also, it'd be cool if Windows could show the exact changes that (more...)

IE view source - add F3 hotkey for "Find next"

Submitted by Indrek on June 10, 2009 to Usability

In text editors as well as many other apps, F3 is pretty much the universal hotkey for jumping to the next search result. It even works in Notepad and regedit.

Add the F3 hotkey to the IE source viewer. If a search term has not yet been entered, have it act like Ctrl+F (ie. open the Find dialog).

For bonus points, add Shift+F3 for "Find previous".

Individual defragmentation schedules for different partitions/drives

Submitted by Indrek on June 10, 2009 to Usability

The ability to set the schedule for defragmentation is nice, but unfortunately it applies to all drives. This might be fine for people who just have one large C: drive, but for more advanced partition layouts it's not sufficient.

WMP - provide detailed status when updating library

Submitted by Indrek on June 10, 2009 to Usability

Occasionally I find WMP hacking away at my hard drive, claiming to be updating the media library. I'd like to be able to find out why it's doing that, especially since to the best of my knowledge the library hasn't changed since the last (more...)

When WMP is updating the library, the status message should be clickable and provide a detailed report on what is going on:
- list of files that have been, are being, or will be updated
- details on what was/is changed for each file (added (more...)

Make use of built-in temperature sensors

Submitted by Indrek on June 10, 2009 to Usability

Windows 7 supposedly has a nice sensor framework, which already works with stuff like fingerprint sensors, ambient light sensors, accelerometers etc. But how about also using it to support the temperature sensors that most modern motherboards, CPUs, GPUs (more...)

Add support for built-in temperature sensors, and allow the readings to be monitored in real-time. For extra cool points, expose the data through the gadget API.

Some other ideas:
- keep logs and allow users to view past temperatures (more...)

Jump list recent items fail to update after display language is changed

Submitted by Indrek on May 28, 2009 to Bug

For example, I switched Windows to Estonian and opened a few Control Panel items. (more...)
