Network icon animation?

Submitted by xombie on January 3, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Remember in XP, the LAN/Wireless icon in the system tray used to glow, to denote activity?

I don't mind that they rolled all the network adapters into one icon.

The problem is, it gives no indication of activity. So (more...)

Make the little monitor glow when the network is active.

Allow ways to close windows in Alt+Tab or Flip3D

Submitted by xombie on January 3, 2009 to Usability

You can view all windows in Alt+Tab, but you can't close them from there.
This would be very useful for hardcore multitaskers.

Allow a keyboard shortcut like Alt+F4 to close the currently selected window. Also proposed here: http://www.windows7taskforce.com/view/176

[site suggestion] No way to know what your vote was

Submitted by xombie on January 4, 2009 to Annoyance

If you forgot how you voted on a particular suggestion and want to know, at present, the only way is to unvote and see which way the number goes. How about incorporating that somehow?

(I seem to have reversed the colours in the picture, (more...)

Let Windows Live programs update from Windows/Microsoft Update

Submitted by xombie on August 20, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

First of all, I'm posting this on the Windows website because it is primarily a Windows update suggestion.

Windows Live programs usually don't seem to update unless you run the installer again. (see here: (more...)

Allow WL Essentials to be updated via Windows/Microsoft update. If it can be done for Office, why not WL?

Paint zoom slider snap sizes

Submitted by xombie on January 3, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Paint has few and very big zoom snap sizes. There's no free zoom.
12.5%, 25%, 50%, 100%, 200%, 300%, 400%, 500%, 600%, 700%, 800%

Even though there's a slider included, you can only zoom to these pre-specified scales.

Make the zoom slider work like it should, or have more snap sizes.

Desktop peek isn't consistent in displaying gadgets.

Submitted by xombie on January 3, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Usability

(I'm on build 7000)

Sometimes, you see the desktop gadgets when you peek on the desktop.

But try this:
Have more than one window open.
Click on the Show Desktop button.
Maximize only one window.

Lock/fix the desktop gadgets on the desktop layer, as suggested here:

Windows Photo Viewer is too cluttered

Submitted by xombie on January 3, 2009 to Aesthetics, Usability

The photo viewer has not one, but TWO thick bars taking away from the vertical display space a photo has to be viewed. This, in addition to the thicker taskbar, decreases the area available to display the photo itself. This is made worse if you have a (more...)

The black bar at the top can be removed, those options can be included in the bottom bar, or in the top part of the window frame itself (like Ribbon).

The bottom bar is just too thick, it can be made smaller, using smaller icons, or (I (more...)

Search doesn't work for non-indexed locations in Libraries

Submitted by xombie on August 24, 2009 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

If you remove the "Users" folder from Indexing Options, and then open, say, your Documents Library and search for something, you will get nothing at all. It wont even bother searching the non indexed items.

However, if I go to (more...)

Can't use the scroll wheel OR arrow keys in print preview (Wordpad).

Submitted by xombie on January 7, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

[Build 7000]

Make a document in Wordpad with multiple pages. Open the print preview, and scroll to the next page. Yes, I realize the buttons are there, but seriously, no scroll wheel when previewing?

In fact, those buttons (more...)

Stop the "Safely remove hardware" icon from jumping around.

Submitted by xombie on February 27, 2010 to Annoyance, Usability

Try this if you have more than one removable device.

Plug them in. Now move the remove hardware icon to any position except the leftmost.

Click on it and remove one device. The icon will jump to the left to show a notification. (more...)

Don't make it change position just to show a notification.

Disabled magnifying glass in XPS viewer's search is ugly.

Submitted by xombie on November 1, 2009 to Aesthetics

Looks like it's been turned to b/w, awkwardly selected and pasted as a new graphic.

Website search needs a "Sort by" feature.

Submitted by xombie on October 26, 2009 to Website suggestions

Right now search results seem to be arranged quite randomly.

A sort by Date, Number of Comments, Rating, Fixed, etc would be very useful.

Allow individual applications to be ungrouped/uncombined on the taskbar.

Submitted by xombie on May 18, 2009 to Usability

Sometimes when you're working with several windows of the same application like explorer or messenger, you frequently need to switch between them. This is an area in which the new taskbar performs worse than before, as you have to click or hover (more...)

Add a Group/Ungroup option in the jumplist for individual applications (as in the picture)
