Due to the stupidity of Long (that's me), all comments on the Windows 7 Taskforce after March has been lost.
As a result of this unfortunate event, a transition to a new backend (the one powering heresanidea.net) is being considered.

Run window should have "Run as administrator" checkbox

Submitted by AllUltima on February 14, 2010 to Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

"Run" used to be the "quick and dirty" way to run stuff FAST (i.e. I could Run cmd and get a command prompt). But under UAC I typically need an ELEVATED command prompt, which requires me to find/make an elevated shortcut for. If it (more...)

Add "Run as Administrator" in the Run Window under the Open: [path] combo-box. Require the user to manually toggle the box for security reasons consistent with UAC.

Do not steal keyclicks when asking user to reboot or postpone windows updates

Submitted by dsmtoday on January 22, 2010 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

I ran Windows Update today. It wanted to reboot my machine, so it popped up a box asking me if I wanted to reboot or postpone 10 minutes. I ignored it (meaning I didn't click postpone or anything else), instead clicked on Firefox, and continued (more...)

Do not ever steal focus by bringing this window to the foreground, which will end up stealing keyclicks intended for another application. Just make it activate a blinking icon in the toolbar or something, like it does when something needs process elevation.

Processing multiple copying operations Sequentially

Submitted by isaacarsenal on January 9, 2010 to Usability

When I copy some files from a media to another media (e.g. from a CD-ROM to Hard Disk), i have to wait until it finish, because starting a new copy operations slows down the first one (because both of copies will process in parallel manner).

Prevent focus stealing while in the act of typing

Submitted by AllUltima on January 23, 2010 to Annoyance, Usability

It can be very annoying when something steals focus away from what you are doing. The worst case for me is typing, where, for example, another window opens and suddenly my keystrokes are being input into a new window.

Add a setting in Keyboard control panel called "Prevent lost focus when typing X quickly" with a slider.

I think that if this were implemented thoughtfully, (for example requiring a certain number of letters to be typed before (more...)

Missing button - Destination path too long

Submitted by Beun on January 17, 2010 to Usability

When a file is being copied but the filename becomes too long, windows tells you this. However, windows does not give you the option to rename the files, it only gives the option to skip or cancel the copying of these files.

Add the option to rename these files.

Vintage wizard97 dialog box when importing CSV files into Windows Contacts

Submitted by formula_86 on December 26, 2009 to Legacy

When I got to my Contacts folder, and click Import Contacts, then Import CSV File, the resulting wizard uses the Wizard 97 look, rather than the modern Aero Wizard style.

Update the dialog box to use the Aero wizard style instead, we aren't living in the 20th century any longer.

Open With...

Submitted by bernard on February 18, 2010 to Legacy

Although Microsoft tried hard to get rid of plenty of legacy UI components in Windows 7, it did miss a few. This one comes up when you try to open a file extension that Windows does not recognize. Usually, selecting the "Use the Web..." option (more...)

One of two solutions:
1. Aero-ize this dialog box, giving it the nice, big-button layouts that you see across other areas in Windows 7 (e.g. Aero Wizards, file transfer conflicts, etc.)
2. Nix the dialog box completely and take me straight (more...)

Icon Stay

Submitted by SuperGenius on February 4, 2010 to Annoyance

It is extremely annoying to have rearrange icons after resolution changes.

Icon's should have a save/automatic restore feature for each resolution. Iconoid is a solution to a problem that shouldn't exist.

Allow the ability to move items on the right-side on the start menu

Submitted by computerkid on January 9, 2010 to Usability

Currently, you can add Videos, Pictures, Documents, etc. to the right side of the start-menu. However, you can't rearrange the order. Me liking everything in abc order, I freak out when I can't order it.

Allow the items to be moved or heck add our own folders to the rightside of the startmenu.

Fix This Problem! Windows 7 Media Center Volume Control is Global

Submitted by john_mon on February 13, 2010 to Usability

This problem was pointed out here in a March 29, 2009 posting, and again in a Feb 1, 2010 posting.

There is no way to turn down the volume in Media Center without effecting the entire PC. I thought multitasking was sort the goal here (more...)

Look at any other commercial video application. They all have volume control that is specific to the application. Any!

Rollup-able Notes

Submitted by n49o7 on January 24, 2010 to Usability

The screen space gets obscured pretty quickly as soon as you have a few notes lying around. And this gets worse as the screen resolution decreases.

Make it so that right-clicking on a note's bar (the part that contains the + and the X) rolls it up, like it's been done for ages in many window managers.
