It's Time: Unified Control Panel

Submitted by DavidTaraso on November 6, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

UPDATE 6/22/2010: Re-uploaded all of the concept images. Sorry!

I think the largest issue in terms of usability with the Windows operating system to date is the lack of a central unified control panel. While the OS does have a fairly large (more...)

Merge everything, all properties, options, tasks, EVERYTHING into the control panel.

Please see the mockups I have created here: http://davidswebserver.com/ControlPanelConcepts/

Tooltip for Close/Minimise/Maximise uses XP style

Submitted by Cuppa on November 9, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Legacy

Incredibly, the tooltips for these buttons STILL haven't been updated from the old XP style.

Use the standard tooltip style.

Redesign the IE downloader to use Aero File Operation animation and styling

Submitted by DeathSeeker on December 29, 2008 to Aesthetics, Legacy

Copying, Renaming, Tagging, Deleting, and Moving files in Vista/7 all use a common window styling. The only File Operation that doesn't use this styling is Downloading.

Update the window to use the same styling as the other File Operations.

Here's a mockup to give an idea of what I mean. (Vote on suggestion not my not so good mockup!)

Submitted by NIXin on November 2, 2008 to Aesthetics, Legacy

A lot of windows still use legacy colors. There's not much to explain, here are two examples:
- the background color is gray in "Virtual Memory" and in "Performance Options" it's almost white)
- the create new (more...)

Use consistant colors throughout whole Windows

Get Rid of Unneeded Tabs

Submitted by DavidTaraso on November 6, 2008 to Aesthetics, Legacy

There are tons of preferences and customization windows and such that have been split apart from other preferences windows, but still contain the tab bar at the top, even though only one tab remains.

Related Suggestion: (more...)

These tabs should be removed.

Why is there so much unused whitespace in the Update Driver Software Wizard?

Submitted by Danielsmi on November 6, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

There is all this empty unused space in the Update Driver Software Wizard and we're given such a small and annoying to navigate area to find the actual drivers!!! Why!?!?

Make those boxes wider and taller, the window should maybe be bigger also, I'd like to be able to view at least 7 rows at a time, 10 would be nice but I'll be take 7 rows.

UI Inconsistency in Wordpad

Submitted by joetheplumber on November 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Legacy

Ruler in wordpad is ugly and old, and doesn't fit in with the rest of the ribbon. Also, the gray and the white don't change along with the controls so it's confusing for the user.

Make the ruler fit in with the rest of the UI.

Legacy FTP "Log On As" Screen

Submitted by DavidTaraso on November 4, 2008 to Aesthetics, Icons, Legacy

When logging into an FTP directory through Explorer, the Log On As screen is entirely outdated. The icons appear to be from the Windows 98 era and the color scheme does not match the newer Aero styling.

Update the icons and the window color scheme.

Create new generic install icon for developers to use.

Submitted by hoopla_punta on December 13, 2008 to Aesthetics, Icons, Legacy

So far I remeber that there is no new Aero-Style generic install icon. This is what usually installshield and other apps will use.

Update with a Aero-Style icon.

Default Windows Media Player skin is from WMP8

Submitted by HeresyProgram on November 17, 2008 to Aesthetics, Legacy

The default Windows Media Player skin for Skin Mode looks like it's from WMP8. Skin Mode itself seems like a relic.

Change the default to "Revert" or dump Skin Mode altogether. Now Playing mode seems to accomplish the same task, making the player smaller and showing a visualization/album art.
