Ability to Disable Libraries

Submitted by Wardrop on October 20, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

The libraries concept is a good one, don't get me wrong, but if you don't use them for whatever reason (possible reasons listed below), then why can't we be given the ability to disable libraries, which honestly, wouldn't be a hard (more...)

Either implement Libraries properly (http://www.windows7taskforce.com/view/2539) and provide the necessary options to customise (more...)

"Setting up a new connection with RemoteApp and Desktop Connections" window appears as Windows Explorer on the taskbar. Doesn't make sense.

Put it into Control Panel.

Panel for selecting Indexed Locations for searches falsely shows drives not being indexed

Submitted by dsmtoday on September 16, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

In the attached picture, note how there is no checkmark next to the C: drive. That is fine, I'm not indexing the entire drive, but this view falsely implies that nothing on this drive is being indexed. When I expand the drive by clicking on that (more...)

In every other application Microsoft has written in the past, they handle this problem by using a grayed checkmark next to the drive, indicating that something inside has been selected, but not the entire drive.

Multiple "pin to list" functionality.

Submitted by Bert Alan on September 8, 2009 to Usability

When right clicking on icons that are pinned to the taskbar or not there is a "frequent" sub panel that allows you to delete entries or what not but you can only do it one at a time.

. There should be a way to shift-click or ctrl-click to highlight which ones you want and then select the pin option to apply it to all of them. This would save a ton of time.

Extra option for the: "Not Enough Space on Disk" dialog

Submitted by pedro_cesar on September 5, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

If you try to copy a folder to a disk and the space on the disk is less than the total weight of the folder then a dialog appears advising you of this and giving you 2 options: "Try Again" and "Cancel", so far so good.

What (more...)

I can think of two solutions (that could be even used together for even greater usability)... The first one wold be to ask first if you want to merge the two folders, ask you what do you want to do with the files (keep the old one or replace the new one)* (more...)

Should be an easy way to keep data in sync beween folders.

Submitted by Rob Kam on August 25, 2009 to Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

There is no way to keep files between folders in sync with each other, without using some application like SyncToy, (which offers five different ways to do this). This should be intrinsic to the file system.

For example: First work on (more...)

An improved file system with this built in, so that it becomes trivial to keep various copies of data in sync.

Set up SmartScreen Filter dialog in Internet Explorer is wrongly designed

Submitted by nyp on August 17, 2009 to Aesthetics, Icons

Set up SmartScreen Filter dialog in Internet Explorer is not Aero style, uses the Tahoma font, doesn't use command links, has a XP-styled shield icon and a Vista-styled banner.

Style the dialog like the second one on the image.

IE: add "open with" option for links that require external program to open

Submitted by davidvl on August 6, 2009 to Usability

When I have multiple media players installed, like Zune and WMP, I like to choose with which program I open a hyperlink that can open in both programs.

If at all possible, display the possible programs that the link can be opened with and provide them as options.

Snap in portrait mode

Submitted by fluxtras on July 16, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

I have two monitors. One standard view 16:10 and one standing in portrait mode.

What is the use of window-snapping for me on the portrait mode display?

Realy, have you guys at Microsoft tested this at all (pffff, 5000 developers, (more...)

Easy, make it possible to split it to top and bottom in a portrait mode screen. The fullscreen snap should be moved to the side instead of the top.

Just to make it uniform, just flip the functions of the normal screen.

Sending file via infrared - legacy icons and graphics

Submitted by Indrek on June 29, 2009 to Icons, Legacy

When sending a file via infrared, the progress dialog features old graphics and animation. It also doesn't seem to be able to display the name of the connected device. See screenshot below.
Also, the tray icon is old, as is the icon in the (more...)

Fix it, if only for the sake of the 15 people who still use infrared and haven't switched to something more modern like Bluetooth.

Recycle bin should be removable from the desktop using the context menu

Submitted by antiufo on June 12, 2009 to Aesthetics, Usability

Computer, Documents and Network can be esily hidden from the desktop once they are enabled, because they have a "Delete" command in their context menus.
Recycle bin doesn't have it, so the only way to disable it is using the control (more...)

Add a "Delete" or "Hide from the desktop" item to the context menu of desktop recycle bin. Show a confirmation dialog that explains how to restore it.

Perhaps rename "Delete" to "Hide from the desktop" (more...)

Install From Disk dialog automatically points to A:\

Submitted by nyp on June 5, 2009 to Annoyance, Legacy

Adding a new device, asking where to find drivers, it'll point to... A:\
Seriously, floppy drives are already dead...

The dialog is also non-Aero style.

Point to the CD/DVD drive instead.

Update the dialog to Aero style.

Very annoying legacy save / open dialog

Submitted by patternjake on May 31, 2009 to Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

This is a very annoying legacy save and open dialog which appears when older programs use thier save feature. Its annoying because you have to browse several folders to get to your documents, because back in XP Documents was the actual folder but now (more...)

Force all legacy apps to use modern save dialogs or consider revising legacy support for breadcrumbs / or at least favourite places
