Folders should be previewable in Preview pane

Submitted by brian.shapiro on March 4, 2009 to Legacy, Usability

When a folder is selected in the preview pane you see the text 'No preview available', but the contents of folders are able to be shown through OLE, and having previews would allow users a three-pane Explorer.

This would be extremely (more...)

Simply allow folders to be previewed, the capability is already there in OLE.

Choose Details Dialog

Submitted by Mycroft on November 23, 2008 to Usability

The pane for choosing hidden properties to sort, group and stack files by is cumbersome to use for anything but permanent changes to visible columns. It's too large a list to conveniently scroll through, filled with esoteric properties that aren't (more...)

Put this functionality directly into the menus rather than having a separate modal dialog. Prioritize the properties applicable to the current view, and/or the ones the user frequently selects. Provide a search function to wittle down the list quickly. (more...)

[FIXED] Double line in start menu on Games removal

Submitted by HinoMusouka on January 10, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug

Try to set Don't display option for Games in Start Menu. Then both separator lines will still be shown, though nothing comes between them.

Check if Games is beeing shown and draw only one line, or better, as it was in Vista, group Games together with other user folders (Music, Documents etc.)

Wallpaper dialogue difficult to use with large library

Submitted by HeresyProgram on November 11, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

The wallpaper selection window divides your picture library into subfolders and allows you to expand and contract each. That's a positive. However, some directories contain many files and if you're looking for a specific one, it's not easy (more...)

Why doesn't this window have the standard "Search *****" that every other window does? Yes, you can search the control panel at the top, but we didn't get here through the control panel (well, most of us didn't. Certainly the (more...)

Shell Extension Organizer

Submitted by FearedBliss on May 18, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Removing old or broken shell extensions. You shouldn't have to dig inside the Registry Editor in order to remove old shell extensions.

Suggesting a simple to use Shell Extension Organizer where you would see a list of all the shell extensions on the computer and you would be able to Enable/Disable or Delete shell extensions. There should also be a feature where you could hide or un-hide (more...)

Network and Sharing Center scales badly

Submitted by Cuppa on December 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Icons

Also an issue in Vista: http://www.aerotaskforce.com/view/302

The window basically doesn't scale very well - icons get (more...)

Display scrollbars when resizing past a certain width (rather than trying to squash everything together).

Make use of built-in temperature sensors

Submitted by Indrek on June 10, 2009 to Usability

Windows 7 supposedly has a nice sensor framework, which already works with stuff like fingerprint sensors, ambient light sensors, accelerometers etc. But how about also using it to support the temperature sensors that most modern motherboards, CPUs, GPUs (more...)

Add support for built-in temperature sensors, and allow the readings to be monitored in real-time. For extra cool points, expose the data through the gadget API.

Some other ideas:
- keep logs and allow users to view past temperatures (more...)

Feture: Support .rar Natively

Submitted by likenother on February 20, 2009 to Usability

Now, we generally use .rar instead of .zip, can Win7 support .rar natively?

The problem between .rar & .zip not the compress rate, the problem is the users of .rar is more than .zip. Now the HDD is very very very cheap, nobody care (more...)

Black screen during hibernation? Why?

Submitted by adaz on April 9, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Is it by design? You don't know if the hibernation started at all or if it's finished or not: you have to look at the hdd led (if any!) because you don't venture to plug out the power cord.

Bring back the XP hibernation status bar with new design.

Put Aero into Media Player

Submitted by leaflord on January 5, 2009 to Aesthetics, Usability

The new WMP has a very clean and nice interface; however the interface doesn't seem as native as explorer(s) due to lack of enough aero IMO..

It'd be nice if the aero can seep into the back-forward buttons much akin to IE8 or Explorer. The tabs should be lowered and kept in same line as the command bar with a border separating them.

EDIT:
Changed suggestion, removed (more...)
