Add a decent Defrag tool

Submitted by nick on November 2, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

The Defrag tool hasn't been updated in a long time, then in Vista it was rewritten but it came out worse than before.

Please provide a user interface where you can at least see the progress that is made. Now you can't see anything (more...)

Provide a disk map of the current progress, maybe even with a progressbar.

Bring back the basic search

Submitted by nick on November 2, 2008 to Annoyance

When searching in Vista, it searches through the contents of files, the filenames,
with indexing on/off,...
This is all way to cumbersome. I have found that most of the time I find more unrelated files to my search than related ones and (more...)

Bring back the basic search from XP.

Extend the taskbar to multiple screens

Submitted by nick on November 2, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Now when you have multiple screens, the taskbar is only shown on the first one.
It is annoying not having the taskbar extend onto the next screen because you can't see which windows are on there.

It would be nice if the taskbar extends to all the screens, preferably a taskbar per screen.

Tabbed Explorer

Submitted by nick on November 2, 2008 to Usability

It would be nice to have tabsin the Windows Explorer, just like in IE.
This also avoids having multiple Explorers open at the same time.

Add tabs, like in Internet Explorer.

Full customization during Windows installation

Submitted by neopets_35 on November 2, 2008 to Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

All versions of Microsoft Windows have only limited customizable installation. And what I'm emphasizing here is, full customization during the installation. I'm not talking about unattended installation here, which will require lots of editing (more...)

Full customization of a Windows installation during the setup process. The beginning phase of the Windows installation should prompt users whether to install in default setting (where it will install all the default features, like how it does in the normal (more...)

Include "folder tracking" in Explorer.

Submitted by hoopla_punta on November 2, 2008 to Usability

Again this is a suggestion.

This feature would highlight changes made to folders (like when you download new files to your download folder, or new files in your shared libraries)

This will also provide "news" like (more...)

No easy way to move documents and application data to a separate partition / disk.

Submitted by NIXin on November 2, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

If something bad happens to the system, you can't just do a full recovery because by default all documents, photos, music, etc. are on the main, system partition. If the user or OEMs could move the "Users" folder easily (during the OS installation?) (more...)

Add a way to change the default location of Users folder (possibly during installation)

Drive letters change

Submitted by NIXin on November 2, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

Partition/drive letters change when you do one of the following things:
Example [A]:
1. Plug in your drive -> Windows assigns G:
2. Remove the drive
3. Insert a second drive -> Windows will once again assign G:
4. (more...)

Always reserve the drive letter set up for a device by partition's GUID and remove that reservation only if there are no more drive letters available (eg. all filled up from C: to Z:).

Another solution: Switch to GUID identification (more...)

Improved Registry Editor

Submitted by CypherBit on November 2, 2008 to Usability

Registry Editor hasn't been updated in a long time and it shows.

Add search functionality such as Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) wildcards, regular expressions, by date search (newer than, older than).
Show all results at once, perhaps in a separate tab so we don't have to F3 all the way.

I (more...)
