Mockup for Windows Internet Explorer 8 Welcome

Submitted by patternjake on August 18, 2009 to Aesthetics, Usability

The current IE8 First run wizard is very scratchy and some of the icons are pixellated.

Update the IE 8 first run to be more user friendly and more aesthetically pleasing.

See my mockup for a suggestion.

Update the DXDIAG to be more useful and automatic

Submitted by patternjake on August 18, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

The Dxdiag interface (the main DirectX interface, and just about the only UI avaliable for DirectX) is as old as I can remember. I think it is about time for it to be updated too, and make it more helpful for a user to solve problems with thier games.

As seen in my mockup, DXDiag could automatically check the users computer settings, run some tests and then use Windows Action Center to resolve any problems that has been found. It could also apply patches to peoples games with further integration with (more...)

A more elegant version of the Scroll bar for libaries?

Submitted by patternjake on August 18, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

When a user has a lot of libaries and locations like myself in Windows 7 Explorer, a scrollbar appears. Now its not the idea of scrolling that is the problem.

Its the scrollbar itself. Does it have to be bulky and stand out as much as (more...)

There must be a much nicer way of viewing trees and libaries in explorer. Please, we are open to suggesstions here!

Control panel and explorer a bit boring

Submitted by patternjake on August 18, 2009 to Aesthetics

Since Windows 7 came along, we have alot of this boring white glass effect in the libaries and control panel. To be honest, it gets boring after a while.

Update the colours to be more aesthetically pleasing, or better still, let us use our own backgrounds or blend in with aero, or use a system wide image thats more appealing.

See my mockup :)

My mockup for Windows Media Player 12 first run dialog

Submitted by patternjake on August 18, 2009 to Aesthetics, Usability

OK, maybe the Windows Media Player 12 dialog doesnt need to be done again from scratch, since it will maybe be released for Windows Vista with any luck too.

However, it does need some serious updating since the first run dialog currently (more...)

I have made a mockup of what I think (personally) could be used to replace the first run dialog in WMP12. Since it may be released for Vista, there could be some time to make a good first impression again.

See my mockup attached.

My mockup for the system variables dialog

Submitted by patternjake on August 18, 2009 to Aesthetics

The current system variables dialog that we have now in the control panel is very poorly designed and difficult to use.

Update it so it is Aero style and so it is easier on the eye

See my mockup for a stylized concept on this. Thanks!

Allow color change from the Win7 light blue to match glass theme color

Submitted by JJohnson on August 17, 2009 to Aesthetics

Windows explorer, Media Player, and other default programs use by default a light blue color theme that does not change with themes; only the glass color changes.

Allow the change of the light blue theme to either always match the glass color, or be a separate color in the personalization settings.

Set up SmartScreen Filter dialog in Internet Explorer is wrongly designed

Submitted by nyp on August 17, 2009 to Aesthetics, Icons

Set up SmartScreen Filter dialog in Internet Explorer is not Aero style, uses the Tahoma font, doesn't use command links, has a XP-styled shield icon and a Vista-styled banner.

Style the dialog like the second one on the image.

"Busy" mouse cursor stuttering

Submitted by Soulburner on August 15, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug

Yet another stuttering issue in 7! The default "busy" mouse cursor has at least one last frame missing, which causes the animation to not loop correctly.
See this video for details: (more...)

Add the missing frame?

Allow user to optionally make "HomeGroup" less prominent

Submitted by broccauley on August 14, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons, Usability

In Windows Explorer there is a persistent 'HomeGroup' icon taking up valuable space in the left-hand pane of Windows Explorer. I do not use this feature, nor do I intend to use it (see no difference between this and a standard network, plus (more...)

Allow the HomeGroup icon to be optionally hidden or removed by the user.
If removed, then allow it to be removed completely by the user in control panel (like Internet Explorer).

It should perhaps also be categorised under 'Network' (more...)

Minimised window border corners in Aero Peek are ugly

Submitted by Cuppa on August 13, 2009 to Aesthetics

When using Aero Peek, minimised and non-minimised windows are rightly differentiated in appearance*. However, the corners of minimised windows look a bit strange on a light background and downright ugly on a dark background. See the screenshot.

Make the window corners the same as those of non-minimised windows.

Aero Basic dark border colour changes at top of side edges

Submitted by Cuppa on August 11, 2009 to Aesthetics

The dark grey outer border colour on Aero Basic windows changes slightly just beneath the Close button (and at the same point on the left edge). See the screenshot.

(Even by my standards this is nitpicking - but I don't see why it (more...)

Use the same colour along the entire side edges.
