Should we report IE9 beta quirks?

Submitted by formula_86 on April 19, 2010 to Usability, Website suggestions

Even though IE9 isn't a part of Windows 7, it is tightly focused around Windows 7 in many ways which makes me wonder whether or not it would be appropriate to post UX quirks about IE9 here as the development of IE9 progresses.

Long Zheng, please let us know whether or not it would be appropriate to post UX quirks about IE9 here. Thank you.

Improving Task Bar

Submitted by qwerty on April 17, 2010 to Usability

a few suggest with taskbar.
1. open application icons should be group together(move closer together), ungroup when application close, so i don't need to move too much to get to the application.
2. better way to access multirow icons. (more...)

Layout options & window sizes in Explorer

Submitted by csayre83 on April 17, 2010 to Annoyance, Usability

Changing window size & layout options in Windows Explorer affects subsequently opened Explorer windows universally. I often arrange several open windows so that they can all be viewed simultaneously and I can copy/paste, reference text, or drag & (more...)

Perhaps this could be solved with shortcuts? If one could create a shortcut to a folder, library or network location and associate layout options for the browser window the shortcut is meant to open it would be helpful.

'Default Programs' control panel is does not provide nearly the same functionality as 'Folder Options>File Types' did in previous versions.

Submitted by csayre83 on April 17, 2010 to Annoyance, Usability

Having gone straight from XP Pro to Win7 on all my machines, the loss of functionality due to elimination of the 'File Types' tab in Folder Options is killing me. I want to change default icons and also associate actions for specific file types (more...)

Bring this functionality back, no matter the form or framework... Just find a way to bring this functionality. It is pivotal to the needs of ANY, not only advanced, Windows user.

translation issues

Submitted by betsy00 on April 16, 2010 to Usability

I was pleasantly surprised with the new " translation" addition to microsoft word.
You could say there are a few tweaks. This requires a long explanation.

1. English spelling to Arabic characters is no translation. Arabic (more...)

The Best Solutions

Egyptian, Lebaneese or Moroccan Arabic would have been a much better choice,
along with an actual translation. Because of ancient history, Egyptian Arabic is the most commonly taught in the U.S.

Excel Worksheet Tabs (This is really for the Microsoft Office Suite)

Submitted by tp224 on April 15, 2010 to Aesthetics, Usability

In very large excel workbooks, if you have a large number of worksheets in your workbook that you need to toggle between frequently, it can get annoying to have to scroll back and forth across the bottom. The shortcut keys make it easier and you always (more...)

It would be nice, and much more usable if there were a display option that would allow you to tab your worksheets vertically/on the vertical scroll bar (Identical to the format for page tabs that is currently used in OneNote 2007). This would be useful (more...)

NTFS should handle Original Creation Date

Submitted by pedro_cesar on April 15, 2010 to Usability

When you copy a file (not moving) the Creation Date gets replaced by the date in which you copied it. This makes sense because that specific file was created in that date, however, what the file represents (a family picture for example) was not created (more...)

Have NTFS include an Original Creation Date that can never be changed or have it not replace the Creation Date, when you copy a file, and instead put the old one.

Snap Any Window to Half the Screen Size in Windows 7

Submitted by lenida on April 14, 2010 to Usability

I have a 23inch monitor and its somewhat difficult for me to drug a window across the screen so that it can be half the screen size.

There should be a link or a right click option on the menu bar to allow users to do that.

Paint: Make the shape drawing tools as flexible as in Microsoft Office apps

Submitted by xml97 on April 11, 2010 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Say for example you draw a speech bubble, it is very difficult to position the pointed bit from the speech bubble to exactly where you want.

Make the shape drawing tools as flexible as in Microsoft Office apps as in you can move the shapes and adjust the shapes exactly however you choose to do so.

Add an option in Windows Explorer to split zip files across multiple locations

Submitted by formula_86 on April 11, 2010 to Usability

Third-party compression utilities allow you to do this, and I know that Windows Explorer does in fact allow you to open zip files that span multiple volumes, but there is no option to allow you to create multi-volume zip archives.

Add support in Windows Explorer for creating multi-volume zip archives.

Customisable font size in Windows Explorer

Submitted by KirbzStar on April 8, 2010 to Aesthetics, Usability

I'd be good if you could change the font size of the folders and files in Windows Explorer. Making it just 2pt smaller lets it display so much more :)

IP address settings to be linked by wireless network

Submitted by KirbzStar on April 8, 2010 to Annoyance, Usability

When using a laptop and carrying it from network to network, almost each network I visit requires me to change my ip address (particularly taking it between home and work).
Every time I need to change my ip address, i'll go to the wireless (more...)

Have the ip address settings to automatically change based on what was last used for that particular wireless network.

Windows Explorer slow to sort files

Submitted by KirbzStar on April 8, 2010 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

If you have a folder full of say 100+ media files (movie and or photos), and you want to do a sort by date in details view, the computer will think for a few seconds (the green progress will creep along the address bar) before it actually does the sort.

Date sorting should be instant.

Windows Explorer to have favourites toolbar

Submitted by KirbzStar on April 8, 2010 to Usability

In windows explorer, the favourites section is great, but you can only see those favourites if you scroll the folders panel all the way to the top.

Have a favourites bar (just like in your common web browser), so all of your favourites are always just one click away.
This bar can be turned on or off.

Media Center using remote with multiple monitors

Submitted by crandelj on April 7, 2010 to Annoyance, Usability

If you use multiple monitors and want to run Media Center in one of them full screen, then using a media center IR remote will give you the frustrating result that some remote functions will work fine all of the time, yet others will only work when you (more...)

Thoughts on potential solution:

Utility to lock MC remote input to MC (perhaps sys tray for ease of access but just as easily put on task bar). Could also unlock MC remote so it would work in other applications.
