Burn Disc Image does not show progress in the Taskbar

Submitted by eikonoklastes2 on January 4, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Unlike several other Windows operations that show the progress in the task bar icon, burning an ISO with Burn Disc Image does not.

Show the burn progress in the task bar icon for Burn Disc Image

Why is there so much unused whitespace in the Update Driver Software Wizard?

Submitted by Danielsmi on November 6, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

There is all this empty unused space in the Update Driver Software Wizard and we're given such a small and annoying to navigate area to find the actual drivers!!! Why!?!?

Make those boxes wider and taller, the window should maybe be bigger also, I'd like to be able to view at least 7 rows at a time, 10 would be nice but I'll be take 7 rows.

[!] Windows hangs for a while when performing disk operations [!]

Submitted by NIXin on November 2, 2008 to Bug, Usability

This is a severe low-level design problem. Applies to all of Windows and most software written for Windows. Vista made some progress with this, but still, it doesn't work as it should.
The problem:
Let's say you have a badly scratched (more...)

Reimplement disk access.
Don't wait for one disk/network operation to complete in order to continue - multitask!
Asynchronous I/O is the answer here.

Search Installed Updates - KB number

Submitted by CypherBit on November 2, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

When I start typing the KB number (without KB in front of it) in the Search Installed Updates it doesn't display the update I'm searching for.

It finds KB958644, but doesn't find 958644.

Instantaneously search for updates based on the KB number, even if KB isn't included.

Progress Bar in SuperBar WMP

Submitted by BraedenP on November 6, 2008 to Usability

The small Windows Media player that pops up upon hovering over the WMP icon lacks a progress bar. Yes, it's a useful tool, but it'd be a lot better with a progress bar.

Provide more details about search results in Start Menu

Submitted by tino on November 10, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Would be very helpful to get more information about the selected search result (especially thumbnails for images). Show what is in the details pane in Windows Explorer and for applications the Start Menu could show the Jump List for the selected program.

Display the details pane for a selected file and a Jump List for an application.

Wordpad Spellcheck

Submitted by loopyoyo on November 3, 2008 to Usability

Wordpad desperatly needs a spell check...woth todays im's/phone texting and what not...the fate of the gramatically correct world rests on proper spelling. The world might literally go to shambles if this feature isnt implemented into Windows Seven. (more...)

I think your guys proably know how to code this into wordpad so i dont need to go into further detail.

P.S. and when your done with that can you shoot around the possibility of maybe a spell check for ie8 also?

Which IE is which?

Submitted by StormChaser on January 19, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

In the volume mixer, if you have multiple IE tabs that produce sound, each will show up separately, but it's impossible to know which is which without trying each one.

Display either the name of the tab instead of Internet Explorer, or show the name of the tab on a mouse hover.

ALT+F4 should close a window while in Flip 2D

Submitted by tino on November 8, 2008 to Usability

With ALT+TAB we can easily switch windows. It would be great that while you still holding down the ALT-key, pressing F4 would close the selected window. Would enable users to close a lot of windows very fast.

That is a nice detail in OS (more...)

ALT+F4 should not close Flip 2D but the selected window.

Submitted by joseph.rall on November 3, 2008 to Usability

In the event of a monitor error with multiple screens, it's nice being able to go to the Display Settings window and adjust the resolution / screen setup. When a user right clicks on the desktop and selects 'Display Settings' the window (more...)

Add some more intelligence to this particular context menu so that the window will open up on the screen where the it was clicked.

Windows Image & Fax Viewer doesn't animate animated gifs

Submitted by DARKGuy on December 21, 2008 to Bug, Usability

If you double-click a .gif on a folder, it'll open IE, but if you cycle to it using the image viewer, it won't animate.

Animate GIFs? also, make it faster, not like XP which did but at 1/2 of the real speed.

Windows Explorer Scrolling

Submitted by Englez on November 20, 2008 to Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

In MS Outlook, to be able to scroll through some pane, it's enough to position your mouse cursor somewhere in that pane. In Windows Explorer, first you have to click on some part of the window to begin scrolling through it.

Make Windows Explorer behave like MS Outlook.
