*FIXED IN RELEASE CANDIDATE* There shouldn't be an Eject AND Safely Remove option for USB flash drives just one option.

Submitted by Danielsmi on November 9, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

When you right click on a flash drive it says Eject and Safely Remove. IDK which one to chose or why there's two options if they do the same thing. Can't we just call it eject instead of safely remove, it's easier to say and less scary.

Can't we just call it eject and drop this whole safely remove thing all together, it's easier to say and understand.

Flashing Window Effect is too faint

Submitted by Cuppa on November 8, 2008 to Aesthetics, Usability

It's hard to determine which window(s) in a group is flashing/requesting attention (e.g. Messenger windows). The flashing effect for the taskbar itself is fine, but the one for the previews is too faint.

On the white background of (more...)

Make the flashing effect darker.

Disabling Shadows For Windows, Results In A Horrible UI Look

Submitted by AsianOnRoute69 on November 7, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Usability

In Windows 7 Build 6801, when shadows are disabled for windows or menus, the shadow effect looks horribly unfinished and is a huge UI problem. The look feels unfinished and unpolished.

Remove shadowing effect all the way for windows and remove shadows for menus only like in vista or develop a new non shadow look for aero interface.

The status bars and rulers of some applications doesn't match the standard user interface principles

Submitted by Antonio on November 13, 2008 to Aesthetics, Usability

Paint, Wordpad and other application have ad old status bar and rulers (colour and graphic) if compared with the one seen in windows live applets, windows explorer or the last version of office.

Replace the status bars and rulers to match the new graphic style.

Give alt-tab the enhancements from enhanced taskbar

Submitted by jonathanmarston on February 17, 2009 to Aesthetics, Usability

The new taskbar enhancements are great, but alt-tab should get updated to match for consistency and improved usability

When you press alt-tab and continue to hold alt, Aero Peek should be enabled when hovering over thumbnails, and a close button should be made available (see mock-up).

Also (not in the mock-up 'cause I'm lazy), it would be nice (more...)

Hiding Icons Also Hides Gadgets

Submitted by BraedenP on November 4, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Icons, Usability

If, in the context menu on the desktop, you select "Hide Desktop Items", it hides both the gadgets AND the icons.

Many people would like to hide the icons until they need them, but still view the gadgets in the meantime, like (more...)

Make separate buttons; one to hide gadgets and one to hide icons.

A couple issues with the gadgets window:
1. The background behind the paging controls appear to be incorrect

[fixed] Explorer: You can't right click and "paste" text to the search box

Submitted by tino on January 3, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Imagine you want to search for a term you have copied to the clipboard (like maybe a difficult name or long filename), in build 6956 there is no right click menu in the search box of Windows Explorer!

Bring back the standard context menu (like it still exist in Media Player).

This would be a website suggestion, but since there is no category for it...

Long, when you know you have a MS Employee join and do the "wont fix" " fix" deal, add a {MSFT} tag to their name, so we can know that this (more...)

Let the superbar item glow after starting an app by the shortcut Win + {Number}

Submitted by sibbl on December 17, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Usability

When I want to open an application by clicking Windows + 2 I don't get any hint whether Windows recognized my key stroke or not. I have to wait until the application windows appears.

Let the button in the taskbar glow like it does after clicking on an item

Dynamic Icons using badges, not animation, in taskbar.

Submitted by hoopla_punta on November 8, 2008 to Aesthetics, Icons, Usability

A suggestion:

If you have read Long Zheng's istartedsomething.com, you would have seen that icon can display progress bars (a wonder) and other things.

I suggest that things go one step further, and allow icons to show statuses/numbers etc. in the taskbar, esp. since there's much more space for it.

For example,
Explorer: Paste Finish...
WMP: Current status (playing/paused)

Bring back Microsoft Tinker (Vista Ultimate Extras)

Submitted by antiufo on May 15, 2009 to Usability

Microsoft Tinker is an interesting game released as Ultimate Extras, but it can't be downloaded with Windows 7 because it no longer supports Ultimate Extras.

Include Tinker in Ultimate / Home Premium editions, a standard game for every edition, or as optional download.
