GDI+ Acceleration in Windows 7 is broken

Submitted by patternjake on January 8, 2010 to Bug, Legacy, Usability

OK, this is rather difficult for me to explain, but I will try to explan this issue as detailed as possible.

Because I am a developer I frequently disable the theme service, or just run in Aero basic mode on Windows 7 to make sure all my (more...)

A simple solution, Enable acceleration of traditional GDI model like in Vista and XP. It was fine then, dont break it so we have to move to Direct2D or WPF.

Include black version of the Vista-style Aero cursors

Submitted by computerkid on January 7, 2010 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Legacy

The current black color cursors are the old-style from pre-Vista. They aren't anti-aliased unlike the white aero cursors.

Update them, so they're like the new anti-aliased cursors introduced in Vista, but have them black.

Include fully up-to-date DirectX 9

Submitted by jsmith45 on January 7, 2010 to Legacy, Usability

Windows Vista and Windows 7 both ship out of date copys of DirectX 9.0c.

The latest version is the August 2009 update. While most games that need newer versions will install them automatically, there is little reason they should need to do so. DirectX is a core component of windows, and Windows 7 should either ship with it, (more...)

Network Connections Properties dialog

Submitted by computerkid on January 2, 2010 to Aesthetics, Legacy

The Network Connections Properties dialog (Local area connection properties) needs to be updated badly. It's a legacy dialog that has components I used to see in Windows 98 when I had my old PC.

Update the dialog, so it follows the UX guidelines. Microsoft, if you created the guidelines, use them!

Certificate import wizard is wizard97 style

Submitted by formula_86 on December 30, 2009 to Aesthetics, Legacy

When opening the Certificate import wizard, it isn't Aero Style and is instead wizard97 style.

(At least it uses the Segoe UI font! :) )

Make the certificate import wizard use the Aero Wizard style.

Vintage wizard97 dialog box when importing CSV files into Windows Contacts

Submitted by formula_86 on December 26, 2009 to Legacy

When I got to my Contacts folder, and click Import Contacts, then Import CSV File, the resulting wizard uses the Wizard 97 look, rather than the modern Aero Wizard style.

Update the dialog box to use the Aero wizard style instead, we aren't living in the 20th century any longer.

No option of adding toolbars in parts of the desktop other than the taskbar

Submitted by Stansfield on December 12, 2009 to Legacy, Usability

This option was available until XP, and I think it was removed in Vista (haven't tried though). But it was really nice to be able to move your toolbars to all sides of the screen, or even let them free-float. I think it's a very simple yet useful (more...)

Bring back Inline AutoComplete in IE

Submitted by anonymuos on December 10, 2009 to Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

Inline AutoComplete was removed in IE8 to be replaced by the "Smart" address bar but it is there in other parts of the OS. For users who don't have Windows Search indexing on, the address bar isn't very "smart". Even IE's (more...)

Please reinstate inline AutoComplete in the next version of IE. Those who don't want it can turn it off. Those who want it back should also request it on Connect @ (more...)

Notepad could use some updates

Submitted by Zedo Mann on November 29, 2009 to Aesthetics, Legacy, Usability

Currently Notepad has not changed at all. It is still the same old basic thing. The Menu bar is still showing.

Update Notepad to, at least, have a quick access toolbar.

New DPI Scaling Not Working On Non-DPI-Aware Autostarting Applications

Submitted by Cab on November 23, 2009 to Annoyance, Bug, Legacy, Usability

To make non-DPI-aware applications look bigger, I've disabled XP-style scaling. This works well, but programs that are set to automatically start with Windows are not scaled at all. I am unsure whether this applies for non-DPI-are applications only, (more...)

If I disable autostart of the mentioned programs, and start them manually they are scaled properly.

In the "New" menu, I should be able to create a PNG image instead of a Bitmap image

Submitted by Mephiles on November 17, 2009 to Aesthetics, Legacy, Usability

If I right click on the desktop or a white space in Windows Explorer, I can choose to create an image in Bitmap. However, bitmap is old.

Windows Paint doesn't save in bitmap by default any more. It saves in PNG.

Replace the Bitmap file option with a PNG file option.

Make the scroll bar fade out when not in use

Submitted by umang on November 11, 2009 to Aesthetics, Legacy, Usability

The scroll bar in the Explorer windows waste screen space, especially on netbooks.

UPDATE: See my comment WAY BELOW.

Make the scroll bar fade out when not in use. If the mouse goes near the scroll bars, they would fade in again. This is cleverly implemented on the Zune HD.

Colors for Windows Basic!

Submitted by litemininyuszika on November 8, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Legacy

Not everybody have a high-tech, ultramodern computer, and – in a scale from 1 to 5 – Aero can slow down a category 3 or 4 computer, too. Aero can be turned off, but not everybody likes the baby blue color of the basic theme. Change it's color? (more...)
