Untoggling Auto-Arrange in Windows Explorer

Submitted by Kirbychwan on October 16, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Not being able to drag the order of files and images around to my liking is an immensely irritating limitation for me and all professionals who constantly work with images. It's even more irritating in that W7 is inconsistent in allowing it on the (more...)

Please allow us to rearrange our items in our own fashion that does not involve renaming all of our files or even taking our hands off the mouse. This limitation seriously cuts into productivity, and it is a simple, essential, extremely useful function (more...)

Show size for folders in details view

Submitted by shakey.oberon on October 23, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

I don't understand why you still cant see the size of a folder in details view in explorer. You have to either hover the mouse over the folder or bring up the properties for it.
This was annoying in xp and it still is now, 10 years later!

Simply display the size of folders in the details view in explorer, makes sense to me

Windows Media Player: "Find album information" is very bad

Submitted by antiufo on September 16, 2009 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

fai.music.metaservices.microsoft.com should return more accurate metadata.

* No duplicate albums and low-quality metadata
* Better search and auto-search function (see the screenshot)
* DON'T show results that don't (more...)

Integrate metadata from Last.fm, Amazon, or use the power of Bing, powerset and the semantic html

Run window should have "Run as administrator" checkbox

Submitted by AllUltima on February 14, 2010 to Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

"Run" used to be the "quick and dirty" way to run stuff FAST (i.e. I could Run cmd and get a command prompt). But under UAC I typically need an ELEVATED command prompt, which requires me to find/make an elevated shortcut for. If it (more...)

Add "Run as Administrator" in the Run Window under the Open: [path] combo-box. Require the user to manually toggle the box for security reasons consistent with UAC.

Desktop Background scales images using nearest-neighbour subsampling

Submitted by chongov on October 4, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

When images that are larger than the display resolution are set as the desktop background, they are scaled down using a rudimentary nearest-neighbor algorithm, resulting in aliasing artifacts.

Please view the attached comparison image at (more...)

Use bicubic interpolation or similar scaling algorithm like most modern software does.

Do not steal keyclicks when asking user to reboot or postpone windows updates

Submitted by dsmtoday on January 22, 2010 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

I ran Windows Update today. It wanted to reboot my machine, so it popped up a box asking me if I wanted to reboot or postpone 10 minutes. I ignored it (meaning I didn't click postpone or anything else), instead clicked on Firefox, and continued (more...)

Do not ever steal focus by bringing this window to the foreground, which will end up stealing keyclicks intended for another application. Just make it activate a blinking icon in the toolbar or something, like it does when something needs process elevation.

Locate File window should be the same as Open/Save Dialogue

Submitted by thommck on September 17, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Legacy

Occasionally Windows 7 asks you to locate a file, e.g. if you are installing a device that has no driver on Windows Update then you can browse to a location where it is saved.
However, the window titled "Locate File" does not have the (more...)

Replace "Locate File" interface with the "Open/Save" interface

Prevent focus stealing while in the act of typing

Submitted by AllUltima on January 23, 2010 to Annoyance, Usability

It can be very annoying when something steals focus away from what you are doing. The worst case for me is typing, where, for example, another window opens and suddenly my keystrokes are being input into a new window.

Add a setting in Keyboard control panel called "Prevent lost focus when typing X quickly" with a slider.

I think that if this were implemented thoughtfully, (for example requiring a certain number of letters to be typed before (more...)

[7100 x64] Speed up Layout options

Submitted by gdvlive on September 16, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

There are two ways to select the actual view in the Explorer: One is in the top Explorer bar, one in the "Organize" menu under Layout. When I see the button on the top right, I always think the "Layout" drop down opens in the views (more...)

Move the "Layout" drop down to the "Preview pane" button on the right top next to the existing button. The actual button can keep it's existing behaviour. In my opinion, that makes it faster to change the layout. And it's (more...)

Add 'Search Capability' to Services Console

Submitted by redb on September 10, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Since almost every service in the the Service Console start with Windows
Windows Audio
Windows Backup
...

It's very hard to find what you want.

We would be much better served if we could search the items that we want.

In fact many of the MMCs that exist on Windows would benefit greatly from a 'Search Control'

Different Audio Outputs per Application

Submitted by Deevious on November 4, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Audio outputs to only one device, and the OS is unable to set what device to output sound to on a per application basis.

More customization in the audio panel on a per application basis... Example:
- Set Laptop Speakers as the Default Audio Output
- Go into a Per Application menu, set Call of Duty 4's default audio output to HDMI

Forgets the name that you have just typed when renaming a file

Submitted by KirbzStar on April 8, 2010 to Annoyance

If you rename a file or folder, and there is an error (because the file may be in use, or already exist etc), it will automatically cancel and forget exactly what you just typed. This will leave you retyping the filename from scratch rather then letting (more...)

Don't cancel the rename process automatically. Keep it in rename file mode, so that only pressing the escape key will cancel the rename.

Print to file is completely useless

Submitted by nyp on October 31, 2009 to Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

On most programs that use the print API to open the Print dialog (I'm looking at you, Adobe), there will be a checkbox labeled "Print to file".
On practice, it sounds like a good idea, you could set up the printer preferences, create (more...)

Update the entire procedure. Help the user to print that .prn file. Update the dialogs.
Or just demolish the entire thing anyway. I don't really find a use for it. :P

advanced search--make it useable

Submitted by hansonjb on October 25, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

searching for 2 different types of files appears to be virtually impossible.

the search needs to say to select multiple dates (it appears that you can only select one date)

the types of file needs to appear more quickly; (more...)

bring back the vista advanced search dialog box but make it easier to get to (eg an icon that says "advanced search" that takes you to the dialog box.

Double clicking file scrolls rather than executing the file

Submitted by mrsolid on October 10, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

If you double click a file in a non left-most column where the selected file (or any other file in the same column) has even 1 character of its filename 'cut off' by the Explorer window boundaries, the file does not execute. Rather, the Explorer (more...)

Assume users know what file they want and are double-clicking it for a reason despite the fact that some filenames in the same column are not fully accommodated by the Explorer window boundaries.
