No More Dotted Lines Around Focused Elements

Submitted by authorandrew on April 17, 2010 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Legacy

Windows 7, as of now, shows way too many of those grey dotted lines around stuff. Especially when you use a keyboard a lot to control stuff, they just pop up in the most inopportune places! Seriously, there's like a hover state and a clicked on state (more...)

Remove the dotted lines and make Aero highlighting clearer.

Layout options & window sizes in Explorer

Submitted by csayre83 on April 17, 2010 to Annoyance, Usability

Changing window size & layout options in Windows Explorer affects subsequently opened Explorer windows universally. I often arrange several open windows so that they can all be viewed simultaneously and I can copy/paste, reference text, or drag & (more...)

Perhaps this could be solved with shortcuts? If one could create a shortcut to a folder, library or network location and associate layout options for the browser window the shortcut is meant to open it would be helpful.

'Default Programs' control panel is does not provide nearly the same functionality as 'Folder Options>File Types' did in previous versions.

Submitted by csayre83 on April 17, 2010 to Annoyance, Usability

Having gone straight from XP Pro to Win7 on all my machines, the loss of functionality due to elimination of the 'File Types' tab in Folder Options is killing me. I want to change default icons and also associate actions for specific file types (more...)

Bring this functionality back, no matter the form or framework... Just find a way to bring this functionality. It is pivotal to the needs of ANY, not only advanced, Windows user.

"Save Target As..." fails to simultaneous download two different files with the same name

Submitted by sjharwin on April 15, 2010 to Annoyance, Bug

Sometimes when you download a file (say a PDF) from a site it has a default name for certain files (eg article.pdf). If I right click on the link to that file and choose "save target as", point to a location on disk and click save (without (more...)

I assume the missing is hidden somewhere, perhaps in temporary internet files... but I cannot find that in the AppData.

Paint: Make the shape drawing tools as flexible as in Microsoft Office apps

Submitted by xml97 on April 11, 2010 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Say for example you draw a speech bubble, it is very difficult to position the pointed bit from the speech bubble to exactly where you want.

Make the shape drawing tools as flexible as in Microsoft Office apps as in you can move the shapes and adjust the shapes exactly however you choose to do so.

Clicking on the disc icon displays annoying popup and ejects the disc tray

Submitted by KirbzStar on April 11, 2010 to Annoyance

By clicking the disc icon in windows explorer folder view, if there's no disc inserted, it will display a popup telling you that there's no disc inserted, and the disc tray will open.
This becomes an annoyance if you click on the icon (more...)

Instead of the popup, just display a message on the right hand panel saying that there's no disc found. With the automatic eject, have an option to turn it off.

Forgets the name that you have just typed when renaming a file

Submitted by KirbzStar on April 8, 2010 to Annoyance

If you rename a file or folder, and there is an error (because the file may be in use, or already exist etc), it will automatically cancel and forget exactly what you just typed. This will leave you retyping the filename from scratch rather then letting (more...)

Don't cancel the rename process automatically. Keep it in rename file mode, so that only pressing the escape key will cancel the rename.

Control panel slow to load in start menu

Submitted by KirbzStar on April 8, 2010 to Annoyance

When loading the control panel from the start menu, it'll usually take a second or two to actually load.
This is only a very minor annoyance, but thought I'd mention it anyway :)

Could the control panel menu items be cached or indexed somehow so they come up instantly?

IP address settings to be linked by wireless network

Submitted by KirbzStar on April 8, 2010 to Annoyance, Usability

When using a laptop and carrying it from network to network, almost each network I visit requires me to change my ip address (particularly taking it between home and work).
Every time I need to change my ip address, i'll go to the wireless (more...)

Have the ip address settings to automatically change based on what was last used for that particular wireless network.

Windows Explorer slow to sort files

Submitted by KirbzStar on April 8, 2010 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

If you have a folder full of say 100+ media files (movie and or photos), and you want to do a sort by date in details view, the computer will think for a few seconds (the green progress will creep along the address bar) before it actually does the sort.

Date sorting should be instant.

Media Center using remote with multiple monitors

Submitted by crandelj on April 7, 2010 to Annoyance, Usability

If you use multiple monitors and want to run Media Center in one of them full screen, then using a media center IR remote will give you the frustrating result that some remote functions will work fine all of the time, yet others will only work when you (more...)

Thoughts on potential solution:

Utility to lock MC remote input to MC (perhaps sys tray for ease of access but just as easily put on task bar). Could also unlock MC remote so it would work in other applications.

Eject on Optical drive should try to open and close the tray

Submitted by xe77 on April 7, 2010 to Annoyance

When you eject the CD-ROM drive tray with the Eject command from Explorer the tray opens like usual. However if you re-issue the command while it is still open Windows is unable to close the tray again. I realize that not all hardware supports this (i.e. (more...)

Have the eject command try to close the drive when Eject is issue and the drive is arleady open.

Superbar Tweaks

Submitted by runonce on April 7, 2010 to Annoyance, Usability

The Superbar, being one of the core elements on the current Windows UI requires to be highly customizable.

Inverting the order of the elements in the Superbar, so I could use the Start menu in the right side and the clock on the left. A must for lefties.

Another alternative: Allow users to separate the Start button, the traybar, the clock and (more...)

My Windows 7 SP1 wishlist

Submitted by ddr4000 on April 7, 2010 to Annoyance

Since Windows 7 SP1 is being developed, I'd like to share with you all my wishlist of what I want to see in Windows 7 SP1 and hope that Microsoft takes heed of this. OK, here it is:

More startup/shutdown speed improvements

Microsoft, if you read this, please be sure to include all of the suggestions above in SP1, or even if you can't include them all at once, perhaps include some of them in SP2.

Ditch Windows Error Reporting from Windows 7 altogether

Submitted by formula_86 on April 7, 2010 to Annoyance, Legacy

Thats right; get rid of Windows Error Reporting altogether because although it might seem useful to report problems to Microsoft, lets face it: you very rarely get anything back from Microsoft saying that they have found a solution, and when you see that (more...)

Ditch Windows Error Reporting altogether in both Windows 7 and Microsoft Office.
