Temporarily disable the Aero Snap

Submitted by JK on March 9, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

The Aero Snap is really cool, but it can be truly annoying. You cannot drag windows out of the screen, you cannot resize nor move big windows around at all, as they get "sticked" super easily. It effectively decreases the size of your screen.

Microsoft already has intuitive and known solution used in majority products couple of years - hold the control key. Whenever you hold ctrl key while dragging around toolbars or tool windows, the docking feature is temporarily disabled. I suggest this (more...)

Allow "flipping" Task Bar layout, especially for right/left positioning

Submitted by pmbAustin on February 15, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

When you move the task bar to the right or left side of the display, it would be nice if you could have the option of having the 'start orb' in the bottom corner of the display (so that if you position the task bar in the left side, the start-orb's (more...)

They have done this for Windows Explorer, for IE for Windows Mobile but not for IE7 and IE8.

Integrate the progress bar into the address bar.

Enhance Aero experience for MDI childs

Submitted by Jereck on February 3, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

I understand that MDI child windows should look different than "regular" windows, but why scare users with the ugly Basic theme ?

Use the normal aero theme but without transparency for MDI child windows

Add restore desktop icons position functionality

Submitted by Dunross on January 19, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Icons position is lost after (often unwanted) screen resolution change. It is very annoying to drag them afterwards to their original positions "by hand".

Add ability to save and restore icons position "explicitly".

(Popular solution is to right-click on the desktop after which "Save Icons Position" and "Restore Icons Position" options appear).

Thumbnail previews not available

Submitted by billerr on December 18, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Usability

A issue that occured in Vista. Some applications will not show a thumbnail of their window in thumbnail previews (and in Aero Peek now in 7). Instead they just show a grey space and the program's icon instead of the window's contents. I suspect (more...)

Eliminate the problem, as it renders one of they key new features (Thumbnails and Aero Peek) sub-par.

Show size for folders in details view

Submitted by shakey.oberon on October 23, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

I don't understand why you still cant see the size of a folder in details view in explorer. You have to either hover the mouse over the folder or bring up the properties for it.
This was annoying in xp and it still is now, 10 years later!

Simply display the size of folders in the details view in explorer, makes sense to me

"Your folder can't be shared" error screen is too brief

Submitted by nyp on August 2, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

When a folder can't be shared, it doesn't tell you WHY it can't be shared.
What's worse is that once I go to another computer and check it, the folder /is/ actually shared.

Add more details to the error screen and don't display it when it's actually shared.

WMP: close button not in the "magic corner" (Fitt's law)

Submitted by tino on January 2, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Love the new close button in Windows Media Player's full screen mode but it should be exactly at the corner of the screen so that it is easier to close the player by just moving the mouse into the corner.

Move the close button to the corner.

Run window should have "Run as administrator" checkbox

Submitted by AllUltima on February 14, 2010 to Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

"Run" used to be the "quick and dirty" way to run stuff FAST (i.e. I could Run cmd and get a command prompt). But under UAC I typically need an ELEVATED command prompt, which requires me to find/make an elevated shortcut for. If it (more...)

Add "Run as Administrator" in the Run Window under the Open: [path] combo-box. Require the user to manually toggle the box for security reasons consistent with UAC.

Windows Media center should use the music and pictures library, instead of creating one for its own.

Submitted by jitendragarg on April 25, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Currently, Media center (not the media player, ok), asks to setup directories during first run, and also provides an option to change them later. But media player uses windows library for the same thing. Selecting music folders twice, is not a good thing (more...)

Media Center should use the music, picture and video library of windows 7, instead of asking to setup the same, so that changes at one place will reflect in every place, including media center, WMP, and the libraries.

Inconsistent Progressive Disclosure Buttons

Submitted by nyp on April 7, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

There are so many different progressive disclosure buttons. It's inconsistency to the max.

Make all the progressive disclosure buttons the same. Use the one in the UAC dialogue because I think that one looks the best.

Printing in Notepad displays an old dialog

Submitted by nyp on February 19, 2009 to Annoyance, Legacy

When you print in Notepad, you get an old dialog. And there's a bonus dialog thrown in too, if you cancel the printing.

Remove those dialogs. Other programs don't have it.
